is it ok to buy an assortment of O rings and find 1 that looks like it will fit or make 1 fit or should 1 get the correct O ring for the piece?

I have a couple different boxes/assortments of different thickness O rings and use them all the time sure beats having to go somewhere just to pay an outrageous price for 1 O Ring

In a lot of cases there are O rings that are a specific size and you wont find them anywhere else other than a dealer. If you buy an assortment make sure you pay enough money and get a GOOD set. Ive looked at some of the more "affordable" ones. Most of the O rings have rough edges and almost looked like they had been used already. Not worth taking something apart and putting something questionable in so you can do it again later.

Are you launching a space shuttle or trying to get the cows fed.

I sometimes think they sell assortment kits as a way to get rid of all the odd size O-rings that wont fit anything.

Once you use up the six 0-rings in the kit that fit your tractors hydraulic couplers the rest seem to collect dust.

A drawer full of misc new and used O-rings I have collected over the years usually has something to make do.

Without knowing what you are working on its impossible to give you a blanket answer, what will work fine on a garden hose may not provide the same results on for example a cylinder liner.

ha - reminds me I had to buy two different o-rings for a hydraulic pump on a farmall super-a. I was in a rush and I simply could
not find the right thing in small quantities. I now have two bags of 500 o-rings, one of each size.

I'm quite sure I'll NEVER find a use for even one of them, yet I hang on to them... jusssst innnn case.

Folks make this harder than it is.

A kit like this will get you going most of the time...

The only thing you may have a hard time with is a engineer may spec a o-ring that does not jive with the sizing chart.. Even then its a standard over the counter o-ring. A example would be a Ford unloader valve o-ring its a standard o-ring (-114) that performs a dynamic operation it does not fit the sizing chart spec's...

Give some to a Knitting group. they use them for markers and will bless you till dust turns to rock. Jim

As long as it gets you going, not in a spot that requires a whole lot of time and effort to replace, an assortment will work good. There are so many different ratings on O-rings other than size, like some posters have indicated. IH used some they called S rated and even had the part number on the o-ring. Not good to substitute any other o-ring where that one was to be used. John Deere uses a very hard o-ring on most hydraulics, IH used a much more pliable one most of the time. Neither will sub for the other.

Kinda like will any bolt that is close do the job? What will it cost to replace the O-ring a second time and how much oil at $10 to $15/gallon are you willing to loose before you consider replacing it?

Download an O-ring catalog, like National O-ring. Fastenal, McMaster-Carr and other bearing houses will ship on a credit card.

You failed to mention what's the o ring for? I have a complete set of o rings, however when I need a special o ring I don't have, I go to my local hydraulic shop. He usually gives it to me because I let him rebuild my hydraulic cylinders instead of doing them myself.

Like someone said, oil isn't cheap, get the exact replacement.
