Used Spray Tractor, Pros Cons

Would you buy a used cab tractor that was used as a spray tractor? Tractor has about 1,200 hrs on it, and I do not need it as a spray tractor, just a field utility tractor.

A lot of variables here. Did it pull a pull type sprayer with a rear boom or was a three point hitch boom hung on it with saddle tanks? The closer the boom is to the tractor the more chance of drift getting on the tractor and fading the paint or causing rust. What kind of chemical did it spray? If it sprayed liquid fertilizer exclusively you might see surface rust on any bare metal. If you are worried about actual chemical residue on the tractor most spray chemicals are water suluble so it should wash off easily though not always. If you are hypersensitive to chemical residue fumes you might want to stay away from it, otherwise I would only be concerned about faded paint and or rust.

I've used my 4440 to pull a 60 foot sprayer for a lot of years. That tractor also bales, rakes, plants, and even used to pull the big field cultivator a time or two. Now it just gets 150 hours a year or so. The spraying is just another job and won't wear much of anything specifically.

That said, I have a newer Deere that I use more. I have rebuilt the remote units on it several times. My guy at JD said they wear out quicker if they run a hydraulic motor (my sprayer uses one for the pump). That would be the only thing I would ask about.

On the up side it is already set up for row crop!

I have only seen pictures of the tractor. The dealership did say it was used as a spray tractor when I asked. I noticed rust on the metal parts, and paint flaking off the hood. 12 year old New Holland tractor, with 1,200 hrs. on it. I think it came from a fruit farm. $11,900 they want for it. Probably best to go look at it.

Go look at it. I once hauled fuel to an apple orchard. The drift from the spray they applied to the trees -once a week-ate up a new 560 fuel tank in 4 years.

Sounds to me like it lived its life in a chemical bath. Better take a close look at the electrical system and anything that moves, shift
Levers, throttle, etc.

Thanks everyone for the great advice! Things I never thought about when looking at a used spray tractor. I wouldn't want to deal with the smell of it either....
