Has anyone noticed...

...the amount of snakes on the loose this year? I haven't seen any extra amount around the house but I have put at least one snake a day in small square bales. It's gotten to the point that when the hay wagon stinks I just look for half of a snake sticking out of the middle of a bale. I have no idea how the plunger isn't cutting them off, but it is usually the head half sticking out. Sheesh.

Depending where you live this year, they are either running from water or trying to find it.

Here in Michigan we have actually been talking about the
lack of them compared to the last few years.
I've only seen two or three so far all year.
Two years ago they were everywhere I wanted to step!

Have not seen many at all this year. Floods may be why or the heat and ry now but not seen as many as in years past. But then again I do know about snakes and which are good and which are not

The sickle mower usually gets them here on our farm.

The "remains" are usually gone the next day courtesy of either the buzzards or coyotes.

When a live one gets caught in the baler, then the bale is marked with several small pieces of red surveyor's tape.

The customer is notified that there may be a dead snake in the bale and that there is no extra charge for the bale.

(quoted from post at 06:44:03 07/28/15) More snakes but no chicken hawks in our area. (eastern Iowa) Anyone else notice that.

Funny you mention hawks. We were talking about that yesterday. They used to be in every tree when I was cutting hay and now I rarely see one. We are seeing a lot more rabbits now. As for snakes, Around here in NEAR there are as many as ever and that is a lot.

I would say snakes, mice, moles are pretty much the same. There seems to be a red tailed hawk patrolling every field. One of them seemed to think that I should stop for him, rather than he being in any hurry to fly away.

Seems every time my wife mows the lawn this summer she gets one or two garter snakes. Usually it's a couple per year. They make a respectable "thump" when they go through a mower.

Few snakes in our hay this year, maybe because it has been cooler this spring and they did not need to hide in the tall grass?
We have a hawk family nested in the woods by our pond. Late last Summer, I found one of the adults sitting on a low tree branch while I mowed the fenceline, and was shocked it did not even move when I came near. The next morning, I found the dead bird on the ground under that branch. This Summer, one of the hawks is screaming constantly- I wonder if that is the widow(er) pining for its former mate...

Found my 1st rattle snake in the new to me hayfield west of my house-It was Just across the creek from a shale bluff. Actually cut it in to with the hay conditioner. I've been there since 1986 and this is the 1st 1 I have actually found. Another excuse to pick up that new 9mm I've been wanting. I saw several garter and bull snakes in the other end of this field earlier in the year.

Everyone that lives in the country around here is talking about the hordes of cottontail rabbits they see. I could easily shoot a half dozen from the kitchen window every evening.Wii put some in the freezer in September.

I'm glad that I live over here and not over there!

Can't even see a photo or a tv program on one without having nightmares.

I would use a 13 ton excavator, hit snake with bucket several times and run backwards & forwards over it with tracks. Then dig a deep hole, drop the snake into the hole, blast it with 12 gauge, pour 1 gallon of gasoline into hole and throw in a lighted match. Finally fill in hole and tamp down hard with excavator bucket.

Did you guess that I HATE SNAKES ?
