RAM TRUCK BUY BACK

Yahoo posting says RAM to have to buy back somewhere between 300 thousand to 500 thousand pickups. Any of you guys got one in the fence row surrounded by weeds hold on tow it. Might be good money. Be interesting to see how this plays out and what they pay.

Thanks for posting this. I think I've got both. My 2011 2500 dodge has had the front steering fixed under the recall. I've got a '99 grand Cherokee with the fuel tank sitting in the open. Guess I'll see how this progresses.

I'd guess it only involves certain models with certain problems, and not a situation where anyone who owns a Ram pickup can have it bought back.

I recall 20 years ago when I was a GM Assistant Service Manager, GM had problems with clear coat lifting on certain colors of paint, notably silver and blue, on mid 80's pickups. As I recall, the '86 and '87 models were involved. GM offered to have the affected vehicles refinished at no cost to the owner.

People literally by the dozens showed up in our service department expecting to have any mid 80's Chevy or GMC pickup repainted, regardless of the year model or color. The standard story was, "Joe told me in the tavern the other night that all I had to do was bring my pickup to a GM dealer and it would be repainted for free".

We would point out that we didn't go by what Joe told him in a tavern, we went by what GM told us to do.

I had an '88 Ford extended cab, top of the line I bought new. In 90-92 timeframe, I was at work and heard the same thing. So I went to the local Ford dealer and asked what gives. He had a roll duct tape handy and said something like, well let's see. He put it on 2 or 3 places on my blue and silver truck and got paint off every place.

He said the paint job was free but it would be done on a time available basis. He said a free rental car goes with the deal. And do you have any mechanical problems with the truck? I said that I had a sending unit bad on the rear tank and something was wrong with the smog equipment....forget what. There was one other thing wrong but forget now.

They fixed the truck within a couple of days and called me when the paint shop was available. Took them about 2 weeks but got a dazzling job. None of it cost me a penny.

Oh, this was the truck that caused me to quit smoking. When I bought it I had cloth all over the interior and had captain's chairs done up in velour or something nice. I said that no way would I stink this sucker up and quit cold turkey after smoking since I was 14.

My friend had a Ram truck, he called it the death shake. Had that into the shop to be repaired a couple times. He finally got rid of it for something he felt safe in. gobble

My cousin had his repainted under that program. Many trucks around here were peeling paint....some still are. Blue peels off and the gray appears.

My dad bought his 88 f150 in 92. Tried to have the paint taken care of but they said his was fine, no repaint. Fast forward a few years, and the top of the cab was rusty, as well as everything else besides the drivers side box panel that was repainted after it was replaced following some loosened lug nuts and a run away tire.

Paint is fine my butt...

Models included in the buyback offer are certain Ram 1500s from 2009 to 2012; the Ram 1500 Mega Cab 4 by 4 from 2008; and the Ram 2500 4 by 4, 3500 4 by 4, 4500 4 by 4, and 5500 4 by 4, all from 2008 through 2012. Also part of the offer are 2009 Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango SUVs and the Dodge Dakota pickup from 2009 through 2011

Wonder how many of the owners are going to get caught "under water" with payment balances due after transaction? And then, there's the question of what happens to all those bought back vehicles. This may not be pretty.

I also recall a number of years ago when there was a big flap over '73 to '87 Chevy and GMC pickups with the gas tanks mounted outside the frame rails. I owned two of them at the time.

Outcome was, I ultimately received certificates from GM for something like $500 or $1,000 for each pickup. The catch was, the only way the certificates were redeemable was by applying them toward the purchase of a new pickup. You could wheel and deal at a dealership and do better than that.

I suspect the outcome with Dodge will be similar.

I read through the article, and didn't see anything about the Dakota's Where did you see this?

Wish they would warranty their crappy engine. 3rd 3.7 engine on a vehicle with less than 90K miles. So much more invested in it than its worth the new long block has to last 100K, but before it makes that the transmission will probably be bad.......

I hope they go after Daimler.

They were definitely designed under their watch and were likely cheapened under their watch as those trucks and built many before they dropped out.

The article doesn't say what model Jeeps were aftected. The older (early 2000's??) grand Cherokees??

If it happens then I wonder if we will have to give them another tax payer funded bail out ?

On the Jeeps affected yes, on the Rams no. Daimler dumped Chrysler a couple of years before the failure and forced sale to FIAT.

Still driving my side-tank vehicle. What they offered, as I remember, was a few hundred dollars off on a new vehicle I could not (and still can't) afford.

I still have a '78 with a snow plow on it. Thinking about it, I think it was only a few hundred dollars they offered, nowhere near a thousand.

I suspect on the affected vehicles Dodge will compute the trade in value, and use their own figure for trade in to be applied toward the purchase of a new vehicle. They'll be betting that maybe 10% will take them up on it.

A true optimist!

JD I tried to reply but the site cops blocked it, why I don't know. So I asked why. Maybe in a couple of days I can post my answer.

Thanks,

he trucks they buy back will be repaired and sold. They are paying whatever the new msrp price was less 10% and deductions for mileage. I'm sure a lot of people will be upside down but it's optional....you don't have to accept it.
