I guess the operator must preselect the gear in the front tractor.

That is something, seemed to have been popular with fordson majors or similar in england too, making tandems. One thing is for sure the front tractor needs a bumper guard. I was wondering how it was shifted given it was a 5 speed, seemed to handle a 5 bottom well, not sure what size. Not sure I've ever seen that done to a hundred series before, thanks for posting this one !
 
Looks like a pretty stout guard on the front of the rear tractor. I wonder if they had concerns about it flipping.
 
Local blacksmith shop here made up a few similar units, one I remember was a couple of 930 Cases.

I know there's some movies of it in my late Uncle's stuff, the son of the owner has been asking me to find the movie(s). I need to do that!
