The land would be ridged up first, the front roller leveled and smoothed the ridge. The seed was in the hopper and dropped down the coulter. The open soil would be consolidated over the seed with the rear roller. See the cranked rod driven off the front roller to drive the seeding mechanism



Pierce of Wexford in Ireland was a large manufacturer of horse drawn implements





An inter-row cultivator, the frame was A shaped and could be widened/narrowed using the hand lever.



John Wallace of Glasgow in Scotland were another major manufacturer of horse drawn implements. During WW2 they were the Oliver tractors & implement importers for Britain.

1000's of these old implements were broken up for scrap metal in the 1950's. To-day they sell for big $ as garden implements
 
As a kid we had two of those old one-horse walking cultivators. We hitched them to Dad's old Allis B to cultivate the garden, with my brother and I on each one. It actually worked pretty good and saved a ton of hoeing.
