I just picked up a JD 60 that has extra long rear axles and dished rear wheels. I have never seen this and wondered if anyone could tell me anything about that option? (How many were there? Is it desirable to a collector? Ect.)

Tractors with long rear axles were called "beet tractors" in our area. The tractors needed long axles to work the sugar beet row spacing. We had a Farmall H with long rear axles that we bought from an uncle that raised sugar beets.

Not so rare that they add extra value to the tractor, depending on what part of the country you live in.

Never seen here in western Ohio. Rough guess perhaps 1 in 2,000 tractors were like that. Heard of them but cannot recall what they were used for but it was for some specility item that mounted on the tractor.

They are used in the beet,(pinto)bean, onion, vegatable areas.More common here. They would be slid out to 88 or 90 " and used with a single front on the bedded crops.Do NOT cut them off! thousands of those have been torched off over the years. Seems some guys cant see(or dont pay attention) and wipe out fenceposts, barns ....... when the wheels are set narrow.

I know for a fact that if one is carrying a large box through the barn at a normal walking pace and one's thigh would contact said axle stub quite solidly, the axle will, in fact, feel no pain. The leg, however, may suffer a bruise that, after a few days of near immobility, will lead one to the X-ray department to verify bone integrity. Park carefully.

Standard axles worked for corn pickers, long not needed or wanted as they would destroy the row next to where you were picking.

That would depend on how tall you were. It seemed that I was the right height that the long axle would contact me where it would really hurt; it took me awhile to recover to get back up onto the seat after one of those incidents.
