Anybody else get off Pilosec?

I've been taking that stuff for eight or nine years now. If I miss a day I can feel it. Two days and I'm about immobilized. The manager at the new Agco dealer said he got of it by switching to aloe. I did some research on it. You have to get the strained aloe or it'll cause diarrhea I guess. I got a jug of it Friday. Yesterday and today I took half a pill and drank six ounces of that stuff.
Let me tell you, there must be a real close kinship between aloe and sisal. The only way I can describe the taste of that stuff is baler twine. No aftertaste, but it there was I couldn't do it. I had some orange juice right there to chase it this morning before I even took a breath and I could still taste the nasty stuff.
I hope that if I can get weaned off the Prilosec with it,that I don't have to keep drinking it. WHEW!
So far so good with the heartburn. On the second day now and I feel OK.

When I was younger. I was told someday you will retire, live the good life. Be able to travel be in good health enjoy your retirement. ALL LIES. Sucks getting old.

I usually take a round of Prilosec, or Zantac every year or so, if things get too bad. The rest of the time I simply drink ginger ale. You need one made with real ginger, as the ginger has the effect to settle your stomach and prevent heartburn. Between that, and just watching what I eat, and avoiding things that I know are going to bother me (((whether I like them or not)))I rarely have any issues anymore.

Herbalife has the best tasting Aloe Vera juice. Tastes like spring water, better if it's cold. Walmart used to sell aloe called Georges but I don't know if they do or not anymore. It was pretty good. Aloe vera juice is very healing internally.

Was on some sort of stomach antacid from 1972 until 1992. Started out going to the doc for ulcer like symptoms and got a strong version of Tums. Then priscription for Tagamet. Progressed up to a script for then new Prilosec. Remember getting out of the tractor while baling hay and laying on the ground because stomach hurt so bad. Couldn't eat spicy food or drink any alcohol. Nothing helped. Doc said ulcer surgery or maybe try a "new" treatment. I had read about a three drug barrage in Reader's Digest that was promising for some people with stomach problems. Take three drugs at one time for a week to heal ulcer. Did the treatment twice, first didn't seem to work. Haven't had a problem since. Eat spicy food and drink beer, no problem. Greatest thing that ever happened. Maybe ask Doc about three drug barrage for ulcers if you still have problems.

I'm in the same boat - I can miss one day, but that second day is brutal. I'd like to get off it too.
If you do stay on it, you should get a bone density test - I guess long term use can lead to bone issues in some people.

Amen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And I'm nowhere near as old as some of you fellers. Used to complain at 50 about how I wasn't quite what I used to be. Man what I would give to be in as good a shape as I was at 50.

Hey Randy. Let me know if you have success. I have been on Prilosec for probably 15 years. Just like you, miss it one day and I am hurting. I would love to get off of it. Let me know. My email is open. Thanks - Bob

I have been on Prilosec daily for 5 years. Fighting acid reflux. I can skip a day here and there, and there are times when I have to take it twice daily. I tried to Aloe Vera, and it worked great on the stomach, but I couldn't sleep while taking it.
I have never been able to use Aloe Vera on burns either. It causes more itching then the it helps, so I came to the conclusion that I am allergic to Aloe Vera.

I actually had a surgery for my heartburn last year in March, and I don't regret it at all. It's a relatively new procedure where they actually reform your valve at the base of your esophagus. I also had what was called a hiatal hernia, so they went into my abdomen through 4 small slits and fixed that up, which was more or less why the valve was blown out.

My oldest brother went ahead and had the same surgery with the same doctor this year.

I have not taken Prilosec but did use over counter ant acids off and on and doctor gave me Tagament and Zantac that helped some. After a number of years of trying all those things doctor put me on nnalert and has worked great no side effects or nasty taste in mouth. You can get it now over the counter but not as strong as what you get through doctor.

Ya.I'd heard that, but what scared me more is the talk now that it thins the walls of your stomach and intestines. A lot larger risk of a colonoscopy scope piercing the walls and causing massive infection. I know somebody that it happened to. He's a mess. I'd rather avoid that if possible.

This is Fruit of the Earth from Meijer. I hadn't thought about putting it in the refrigerator. I'll try that and see if it's more palatable in the morning.

The V.A. has me taking Ranitidine for my acid reflux and has had me on it for years. They tried to give me the Pilosec but it did not work for me.

At 79 I must be the healthiest man on this forum, but, as you say, I'd sure like to be able to do what I could at fifty, even sixty! Doc tried to put me on nnalert, but I refused. I control heartburn by watching my diet and taking occasional antacids. I don't take any medications (knock on wood!)

Six years ago I took part in a clinical trial of the Linx. That's a little bracelet with about 13 tiny magnets installed around the lower esophagus just north of the stomach. The theory is the magnets release when you swallow your grub and then come back together to help the sphincter muscle keep acid out of the esophagus. It didn't work too well for me. I still have to take OTC gut medicine. TDF

I took Prilosec for years. Go off it and I would aspirate that nasty acid in my sleep, wake up, and not be able to got back to sleep. Not sure how or if it is connected, but when I went on a CPAP machine for sleep apnea, the acid reflux went away. Still take an occasional TUMS, but very rarely.

Never took Pilosec but I take one 30 mg Lansoprazole in the evening, unless I forget.
No side effects. No acid reflux anymore.

You fellows should be sleeping with your head higher than your stomach. There are foam wedges for that purpose .Idea is when you are sleeping the esosophas will be somewhat higher than stomach acid an will not cause heart burn.

I went from Prilosec to Protonix as per doctor's order and elevated the head of the bed 3 inches and it has worked well for about 10 years now.

A new drug from my dr really did the trick for me to stop all that other stuff. its called dexilant and its awesome .

Antacids kick up my irritable bowel so I haven't taken antacids for maybe ten years and fortunately I get along OK without it. I do have to tolerate a burning tummy sometimes but it's usually not intolerable. Marilyn is on Prilosec full time to counteract burping up acid when she sleeps

That helps . my sara and I spent big bux for a matress,, and also ,, goats milk is great for stomach ailments ,,btdt and still learning . wife has me taking charcoal capsuls for bloated stomach .. worx good

(quoted from post at 10:51:00 07/06/15) Amen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

'll second that!!!!!!!!!

I too have a hiatal hernia. My Dr. said if pills work it's better than surgery and he
the Dr that will do the operation.

I know a older man what had to have surgery. It was very hard on him.

I'm still on the pill for almost 20 years now.

The procedure I had was a piece of cake. I did have some very low weight restrictions for a few weeks, but I found a time of year where I didn't have to shovel snow, lift pellets, or do farm work much. I know it's harder of you have no-one else to do your work, but if you can find the time off, it's amazing.

I'm 30 note and looked at it add a quality of life deal and I didn't want to be on a pill for the rest of my life like many of you guys. The trick is to find a good surgeon.

My doctor referred me to one who is one of the original doctors to perform the procedure and was very good. My oldest brother waited for a little over a year after I had mine, and he decided to pull the trigger and have the same surgeon do his as well.

He had a 4 cm hiatal hernia, which is a lot bigger than mine was. Been a few months now for him sand he couldn't be happier.

This is something you need to take serious. Gone untreated, it can turn into Barret's esophagus, and turn cancerous.

Having suffered from IBS Irritable Bowel Syndrome for several years, a Doctor suggested that I take PEPPERMINT OIL CAPSULES before each meal.

Totally natural product - no additives.

They don't know why but it helps digestion and I now rarely suffer from reflux at night
