Grain truck bed boards

Just pulled the old rotted boards off the Loadstar. It had tongue and grove boards.

What's everybody using these days? Salt treated? Oak?

Regular treated wood will shrink a lot, can't be used. Look for kiln dried oak, tongue and grooved. May have to find a mill that has a four head molder to make it for you.

APITONG is a Malaysian wood with self preserving pitch internally. No preservative needed. it typically lasts 2 to 1 against Oak. It is preferred in new construction. and used in repair as well. When I worked making Flatbeds, We used Philippine Mahogany. Jim

I have one hay wagon decked in Sassafras, the poor man's oak, it has held up well, barely shrank.

This past Winter I built two more of Ash- the lumberman says all those Ash Borers killing trees then leave them to dry naturally in the woods are making for good, dry, flexible wood. Who was I to argue> Think he charged $1 per BF for 16 foot, was a little more for 18 feet, two complete decks totalled $700ish?

I did mine a few years back with treated. Truck had shiplap on it originally. Nobody local stocked it, so I bought 2 x 6 treated and made my own. They did shrink a bit, but not horrible. If I had it to do over, I'd buy the boards a couple weeks ahead and let them dry before installing.

The first floor made it 20 years. If this one comes close, I'll be happy. Think it cost 2 or 3 hundred to do it.
