What size of battery do I need for my tractor

Hello I have a deutz 8005 tractor and I was wondering what size of battery I will need, like cold cranking amps. I just fix all the burnt wires on the tractor and I found a smaller battery around the farm and it has 800 cranking amp and it barely made the starter turn. What do u think will work for a battery? One of the stores in town has a battery with 1200 or so cranking amps will that work or no? Thanks for the help.

The 1200 amp should do the trick.

On the other hand my 100 hp 1855 cockshutts start just fine on a 800 amp car battery.

So maybe you should check the batt cables and ground or maybe the starter has some issues.

Like Bison said. If the new bigger battery is needed we use the ones from my semi They are a group 31 with the studs on top. There is less corrosion so less cleaning. With the stud there are no over tightened clamps to try to make work. A win win all the way around. Also easier to hook up accessories like monitors and such.

Don't know if this is possible, but if you can, run the battery ground strap directly over TO the starter mount bolt. Eliminaates lots of resistance, frame joints, corrosion,e tc.

If you're using a battery 'you found around the farm' the battery may be the problem or other issues. To see what you have hook up jumper cables to the battery and if it starts fine then 1)your battery is weak or 2)You need a bigger battery. If it still won't crank over right then you have other problems.BTW I always buy and install a battery with more
CCA than is called for the tractor or vehicle, nothing will burn up a starter quicker than a subpar battery

The highest CCA and highest amp hour battery that will cram into the battery box.
Run a new "ground" cable direct to a starter mounting bolt. Don't waste your time with walmart 2,4 or 6 gauge cables. Or homemade cables with the two bolt clamp which sort of holds the cable.

One of the first places to look is to make sure the mating surface between the starter and engine are clean. I have seen rust, paint, etc which is basically that last path to ground. Even better if you ground the starter directly. Most never think to look there. An 800 CCA battery in good shape should have no problem even if you are using smaller gauge cables. I have a small tractor with 6 volt battery, 6 gauge cables and it spins over to zero degrees just fine if all the connections are clean including the starter to block even though many say you must use the big 00 cables (not necessary on a small engine with 6 volt battery, although it never hurts).

Hi Buick
Totally agree with your post. It's amazing how many tractors I go to with starting problems, with the finest made in china new under rated
battery cables, or those stupid bolt on terminals fitted. If I go to a tractor and the customer says he's got new terminals it's 100% he's got the
bolt on junk.
I refuse to fit them on the principal it will take me longer to fit than they will probably last from some i have seen.
I buy the largest cable I can fit, then use crimp on ends, or solder them and heat shrink the terminal joints to. I never get problems again with
wires and terminals if the customer looks after them.
I love the guy that puts a new starter on, it makes no difference, then I get called,I start the diagnostic process, and the first thing I find is
2" of green/white corrosion on the battery terminals and 3/4 of the ends and bolts rotted off along with every other terminal corroded or heat
burned. There was actually nothing wrong with the old starter when we put some of them back on !!!!!.
Regards Robert

thanks for the help. the tractor sat outside for 5 years so I'm assuming that the battery cables are in need of a good cleaning. same with the ground cables. if that doesn't work then I'll buy a new battery with 1200 cranking amps.

agree xx on bolt-on batt cable ends. Don't remember brand, but the most honest ones I have seen says 'emergency cable end' [works til the next emergency]
