Hay is done!

Problem? The horsey guy that bought the whole field and who has been buying from me for years and who has been calling all weekend asking when he could come pick it up sent a text saying he did not want the hay. Since he has been buying off this field for several years, we did not offer it to anyone else. Don't even have enough wagons on this side of the county to haul it in...so I guess I get to bring some over tomorrow. Only three of us here to load it. Ought to be a fun day tomorrow. Happens every few years. You just cannot rely on these horse people. They expect you to cut the hay on their schedule and they want the price low but they don't hold up their end and then wonder why they have to pay a premium for extra handling. But that is the way it is going to be from now on. No more picking up your own hay for a discount on the field. You come to the barn and buy it off the rack for top $$$ or take your chances at the auctions. Rant over.

If you have the labor and the space to put good hay up it will just about always pay to do it. I always looked at hay stored inside as just about like money in the bank it will always be worth some thing.

Learned from dealing with pleasure horse people that cash is KING and 90% of them may be horsy people but they have darn little horse sense.

I learned the hard way (several times!!!) dealing with horse people. Now my rule is "cash in hand only." No holding hay unless paid for in full. No deals based on future promises.
Funny thing, my son married a Swedish girl, so several years ago we made a trip to Sweden. While there we visited a farm family there. While we were there they had a deal going with some local "horse people." Farmer told me they experience the same thing--now strictly "cash in hand!"

As good as my long time customers are, I still never count on one to pick up over 100 bales. Some may complain about "competing" in the field with other customers picking up, That is just the way it has to be.

Geez,I was gonna give you a hard time about getting started earlier next time, but if you're having trouble with people like that,I'll leave you alone. LOL
