Amish pickup truck

Was out in the Lancaster area yesterday and came up behind these folks. Pouring rain and nice wet horse power. Notice the picnic table umbrellas and the two girls in the back seat. Pink plastic lap sheet to keep the rain off. Best is the follow up load behind! Mini pickup truck? There are always ways to get things done! This is the only shot I could get but here it is. CUTE Another thought, they are now using some really good and powerful LED lights on their wagons and you really can see them now. Much safer and I like how they power the systems. You have a 12 volt car battery and you take it over to a "charging station" for a refill. Local hardware store or such. Like the real old days when you took the battery for your house radio to get it charged up.

In the Amish community near where I live I have seen V Belts around the buggy wheels perimeter that drives an alternator to charge the on board battery to power the lights. There's another young Amish that sells solar panels and inverters. Some homes have 4000 watt fixed solar arrays angled and directed to the southern sky.

Wonder what happened to the old bike generator we used back in the 30 and 49's. They would be good for the buggies also

There are many of the Amish communities going to the IED flashing lights on their buggies. I think it is a great IDEA. I just about ran over a buggy while hauling feed a few years ago. I also had one with the flashing IEDs scare the crap out of me. He had the lights off until he heard me coming up behind him. So all at once a few hundred feet in front of me this buggy lights up. LOL Heart check time.

As for the little wagon in the picture. I would be that they can park the buggy and take the little wagon to where they need the supplies on it. Smart move so they do not have to unload the things.

The little ones that had a friction wheel that rode against the bike tire for lights hardly had enough power to whip a rubber chicken lol. To charge an auto battery they need more like an automotive alternator like the ones I saw

Looks like a good idea to me!

Several years ago in old order Amish country in Northwest Missouri, I was first on the scene where a car had creamed an Amish buggy from behind. The buggy was destroyed, but thankfully there were no serious injuries to the occupants, an elderly Amish couple. And it was on a straight and level stretch of road. Other than daydreaming or distraction, there was no reason the fellow that hit them shouldn't have seen them. It was not like he came over a hill or something.

Maybe LED lights would have gotten the guy's attention.

I think you would have to use a DC generator. Good Amish do not have anything to do with AC current.

The LEDs sound like a good idea. As far as IEDs go I want to stay as far away as possible from them.

If the guy was not paying attention, or was otherwise not attending to his driving, no amount or type of lights would have made a difference.
These days, there are too many distractions:
Texting
Drinking
Tuning the radio
Watching a DVD movie
Fiddling with a GPS
Conversations taking precedence over driving
Talking on a cell phone

All of which CAN be done but SHOULD NOT be done while driving.

Just remember: When they make it idiot proof, it usually results in development of a better idiot.

The end product of an alternator is DC current.

A few years ago there were a run of buggy crashes resulting in several fatalities. The SMV triangle was not doing the job, so there is a higher safety awareness effort now.
