talking military today and this subject came up: Did navy ships net or catch fish while at sea? Sure would supplement the other grub. any hydroponics or other FARMING? we are just curious. Happy 4th!!!!

I did 6 years in the Navy and no ship or boat I was on ever did that type of thing. Shoot I do not even remember any body ever fishing off of one that I ever saw and if you did catch a fish you would not have a way to cook it unless you where a cook in the first place

I don't know doing range clearances we always dreamed about getting a gator or cow in the shot so we could have a BBQ, we knew the BX had plenty of charcoal

If you look in tractor tales you can see the pictures of what my place looked like. For a day I had lake front property LOL

The garden looks like it may still make it if we do not get to much more rain that is. The creek by my place flows into the Glaize arm of the Lake of the Ozarks. Right now they have all the flood gates open on the dam and a no wake order in place on the lake due to high water.

Shoot the way things are going this year I'll be lucky to get my first cutting done about the time I should be doing my second cutting. Plus now with this flooding I have to worry about things like old tires in the field and who know what else that will mess up the equipment. Just came in from looking at the south field and saw at least 2 big tires out there ones from say an 18 wheeler

From the sea stories of guys at work, they would have loved some fresh fish, especially nearing the end of a long cruise- I've never had a peanut butter and mint jelly sandwich nor cheese tortellini and maple syrup for breakfast, nor meat from boxes labelled"Not for prisoner meals". Sounds like the submariners ate better, but had worse tans...

I agree. In ten years in Marine Corps Aviation, between carrier quals, a couple of deployments aboard aircraft carriers, being a passenger on assorted troop ships and LST's, etc., I probably had more time at sea than a lot of sailors.

I don't recall anyone ever fishing off of a ship. And as Old said, nobody but a cook would have a way to cook a fish if they did catch one.

When I was stationed at the Pacific Missle test Range at PT. Mugu California, one of our duty rotations was on San Nicolas Island , part of the Catalina chain. Not much to do there on out off duty time so I fished a lot. The cook asked me what I did with the fish. I told him I put them back in the water cuz I had no way to do anything with them. He told me to take him everything I caught. He saved all the good fish and when he had enough for the whole roster, he cooked us up some fresh fish. When I told him that at low tide the rock shelves were covered with abalone he told me how to remove them from the rocks. That was some good eats. Still have some of the shells.

Well, never saw any fishing off the USS Newport News, but those Boiler tenders could cook, distill lots of good stuff.:)

But I do remember picking blue berries in Newfoundland, muscadines in Virginia and black berries in Arkansas. I saw a fellow soldier eating wild garlic thinking it was small onions.

Vietnam helicopter pilot I worked with said they brought in a bovine in a net under chopper and had a cookout. Also said they had plenty of chickens around.

I was on the USS Saratoga CVA60. Saw the Captains cook try netting one day.Net got sucked into the screws. He did fish a lot in port.

Boot camp buddy of mine was killed when the number two turret blew up. I was home two days when it happened. He was due to come home a week later.

I was on one cruise where the Captain was a former Merchant Marine Captain. He knew most of the marine radio channels the fishing boats used When we got into fishing waters he would have one boat come over and tie up alongside and he would buy a "Boatload of fish".
