North Dakota Auction Stolen IH 3 point hitch

I attended a Haugland Auction yesterday near Ray, North Dakota. I bid on and bought a IH 3 point hitch. Included lower drawbar arms and top link. Probably from a 1486 type tractor. The auction wasn't quite over when I went to pay for my items and retrieve my truck which was parked down the road, so I could load my purchases. When I returned about 20 minutes later, my 3 point hitch was gone. Talked to the family having the auction and the Auctioneer and a few other bystanders. No one noticed who stole my just paid for IH hitch. Just a reminder in case anyone in the area hears anything, or notices this hitch/top link for sale. Who would think there would be a thief at a Farm Auction, so brazen to steal in front of every one else there.

Not much you can do_Once the auctioneer says sold it belongs to you and your supposed to take care of it.Your farm insurance might cover it.I've had that happen a couple times over the
years.I took 6 new 9.20 truck tires to an auction at archbold ohio and someone stole them before the auctioneer could sell them. I bought a set of 500 dollar pallet forks at an aucion and they were gone an hour later.Auctioneer said "to bad" there yours.Someone told me the guy that bought the skid loader took them.I called the sheriff, but he said he couldn't do anything because he had to witness the theft to make an arrest.Otherwise it's just your word against the thief, unless you have a serial number.

I've seen that kind of thing happen more than once. A full set of coulters came up missing from under a gas barrel before the auctioneer even got to them at one sale. I watched some lowlife pick up a new surcingle strap for a Surge bucket milker and put it in his coat pocket one time. I saw somebody try to pocked a pulsator off a milker one time too and opened my mouth that time.

Cousins estate auction, I went up about 3 days before and made sure all the machinery was running. Helping line up stuff morning of auction his cub would not start. Checked it and discovered wires had been swapped around in distributor cap. Bet someone was surprised when it started right up in auction.

Went to an auction last weekend. Someone had something he bought disappear early in the auction and when the auctioneer mentioned it he said "It's started already." Must be common enough.

Every auction I've been to in the last ten years or so the auctioneer has announced before bidding began that the buyer was responsible for every item they bought. That tells me that it's a long standing problem and nothing new.

I was at an auction that 2 brass john deere carbs were stolen by someone giving someones number that was not their own. I don't know the final out come on that, but my number stays in my pocket till i'm asked to show it to a clerk.

At the local three times a year consignment sale there is one way in and out and the local sheriff is at the gate checking receipts against what is on the truck. Has cut theft to almost none.

Attended a cattle auction once and as usual the cows were not milked the morning before the auction. When they went to milk them out after sale it was discovered that someone stole all 6 pulsators from the milk house.

Mom bought a nice Oliver plow back in 82 or so and by the time I drove down with a tractor to get it, someone had stole all 4 coulters.

Had all the double disc openers stole off a grain drill the night before an auction in 90

Auctions will bring out the worst in some folks, or maybe they attract the worst.......

I do appreciate all the people who responded to this post. Yes, I
have known for years that once the Auctioneer says "sold", you
are responsible for your new property. As a side note, the
Haugland Family are a very professional Auction Company out of
Northwest ND. It's a pleasure to attend their well managed sales.
I also found out that days before this auction, some thieves
stole three of the guns that were to sold on the estate auction.

One of the nicest BTOs around here, father of a high school classmate of mine, passed away last Summer. Someone broke into the house during the services at church and took everything- filled the pillowcases like in the old movies. The worst are everywhere.
