durn rite ,, that computerized electronic solenoids is nuthin but expensive bs , those modern tractors will be scrapped out of disgust , rather than repaired ..., but my 4020 deer don't run for nuthin , either , new brakes , steering motor , pto clutch pac and traction power shift clutch pak... 2 injection pumps , starter , alternater,, hydraulic pump and all the hydraulic oil and filters .. ect ....I spent a l ot of money trying to make it start , and run , and keep the power shift rite ,,that I have got to keep it working to get my money back out of it . kinda scared to run it ., because it seems sumthin fails everytime I use it .. the cheapest and most dependable tractor to keep going around here is the DC Case and the 430 diesel ..

That's picture makes me laugh. The exhaust on that
4020 is just as low as mine. The extension
disappeared long ago so it would fit in the lean-to.
Now I eat diesel smoke everyday.

That's funny. A friend of mine got 20 acres of hay wet because his brand new JD had a wire come loose and the transmission overheated. My old IH tractor and 15 year old JD baler got my hay baled.

I'm in high school and wor at a deere dealer, even I can figure out new tractors. I understand not everything is perfect on new tractors, like wiring harnesses that can't be soldered. But all the bitchin about new stuff irritates me. Maybe we should go back to 2 cylinders and 4 row planters? Even the old stuff took some time to get sorted out and made dependable, just like the new stuff needs some time to get perfected

blue924.9; I am glad your working and in school. The trouble is when you pay as much for a new tractor as you did just a few years ago for an entire farm they had better be PERFECT!!! The trouble is that the new stuff is much more complicated and they are having reliability issues with it that are hard to repair at times. When a new tractor can easily be $200K and your planting window is 10 days long it had better not take the dealer a week to figure out what went wrong with the computer.

It makes me happy to see your attitude about the 'new' stuff! :) As long as there are youngsters out there that understand and can work on the new electronically controlled systems being mandated by the government there is hope for our way of life. [b:988bbaf1c9]GOOD ON YOU[/b:988bbaf1c9] - keep on keeping on! 8)

I quit farming in '96, worked a real job, retired at 58 with my farms paid off.

BUT, I had to work for the MAN for a number of years.

Aint fun.

I can understand that, but what I see more often is a quick diagnosis but it takes a week for parts. Yes there are times finding the problem takes awhile but usually they would take awhile to find without computers as well, example being a/c leaks. I will say in the last couple of months the scanners have gotten alot better and this is the biggest improvement deere needed to do

Your on the right track and your skills and enthusiasm will take you a long way. From my point of view, if I had my druthers I would like new equipment and do buy new when possible. The difference I see is when a newer piece breaks down if you haven't had the training you can screw up more than you can pay for and it might void the warranty. Also, as a small operator if I have a breakdown that requires a dealer service call it's usually the busy time of the year. Since I don't give them as much business they go to their best customers first. That extra day may cost me 2 weeks, it would have this year. My older equipment is easier for my ancient mind to figure out. In 50 years you may have the same problem

I think the point he was trying to make was, for 200k, the price of a nice house in the 'burbs, you shouldn't have these problems to begin with. The machines should be gone over with a fine tooth comb because their reliability is the farmers lively hood, and loosing crops because the fancy new machine wasn't built strong enough is a real concern. A $5000 backup machine for when your $200,000 machine is broken just seems a bit ridiculous to me.

In 1958, I just got out of the Army and started working at an IH dealer. The 560 was just introduced the month we had a family picnic. My wife's uncle, who drove a cross motor Case tractor asked, what are these new fangled tractors going to be like in a few years. No one will be able to work on them. And so it goes. Me, I know nothing about the tractors produced in the last 15 years, but for all the years before I retired, I worked on the latest and greatest so to speak.
