OT Rye Straw Price

I have about 5 acres of cereal rye that is about ready to combine. Probably be around 300 square bales of straw. Wondering what straw is selling for? Last year I think I sold it too cheap, $2.50/bale and I paid for baling. Thanks, Chris

Around here it goes wholesale for $3.50. My son put up 16000+ bales this year with new JD baler and old Farmhand accumulator. Last year he put up 10000 bales and sold every bit. This was his barley and wheat straw.

As much as you can get for it... I sell it for 4.00 out of the barn. If I had a large amount I might sell for 3.00 off the field IF and I mean IF I was confident the buyer would show up to haul it. Keep in mind that rye straw is not really as desirable due to it's spindly stalk... and the color is generally not what the decorative market wants either... but in some markets beggars can't be choosers..

here in new england straw is going for $6-9 a bale. I tilled up part of one of my hay fields that was getting a little weedy to plant winter rye just for the straw...

weekend farmers buy it for bedding for there goats or horses or whatever.. and there are some large fruit and vegetable farms around here who use it for mulching.

In February 'here' you can get $3-4 a bale for good straw bales.

This time of year, you are lucky to get $2 a bale.

Wheat straw is coveted 'here'. Oat straw is ok. Barley straw is rare, but coveted. I haven't seen rye straw in a while; back in the 70s it was kinda rough and stringy and at or below oats straw value.....

I sold all my straw last year at $2.50 if they bought a whole wagonload, off the wagon. One customer bought several wagon loads and I delivered them for that, they unloaded.

I never had to wait on empty wagons at those prices, and it saved lots of extra handling.

If people are buying just a few they are $4, or $3 for a pickup load...

Why would you sell straw that cheap? You would realize more value than that in organic matter returned to your soil, just saying.
