Progress will stop for a while, as I have been a little sick. I'm tying to find out whats causing severe headaches, but they disappear with one aspirin and a baby aspirin. I'm not sure if it's caused by the welding fumes or what, we do use a fan to blow the fumes away.Probably wont get back to it till the 7th or 8th of July, several days past my birthday,July 2nd = 80 years. Hope to get the splitter completed by wood time.

To let you all know my Son is covering most everything, all I can contribute is ideas and some welding, everything else he does, bless his heart, as this family is sure lucky to have him grace the members.

Hope you all enjoy the pictures of an 80 year old mans endeavors. Like the sign says above my computer" Success is not to be measured by how much material wealth is possessed, but whether you are able to create at will what you need."
Pay no attention to the rusted muffler, the engine came that way,but will be changed . You can note the small plate on the engine mount, it's to get access to the engine/pump coupling without crawling under and looking up to work on it.
Warmest regards,
LOU

Hi Lou Happy Birthday 80 is a milestone to my thinking hope in ten yrs to make that. Great looking woodsplitter also.

Looks like the welding's mostly done. If you have more to do if you're using a stick welder why not do it outside. Wire weld wouldn't do so good if there's any breeze.

Lou, First Happy Birthday, second Are you building this out of your own ideas or from a blueprint, if from blueprint, may I ask where you got it, as that is looking like what I want to build.

A glass of milk may help with the headaches if they are from welding fumes but if fumes ARE responsible you'd better change your procedures to keep from inhaling those fumes  'cause continued exposure can cause serious health issues 8)

The pictures show some very nice work; you are to be commended! AND.......[b:888bd122cf]HAPPY BIRTHDAY![/b:888bd122cf]

Reslls,
Thanks for the reply, the thickness of the tank is 1/4" top and bottom, 3/8" sides. Only because they didn't have the 12" by 6" rectangle tubing in stock, and we were forced to build one. It should hold 19 gallon, but we are only using 12 gallon of oil. Most of the splitters we looked at were using less than 8 gallon, and the oil gets too hot. More equals cooler running and better seal life on the pump.
Regards,
LOU

Thanks mj,
We're welding in front of the garage door, almost outside with a fan behind us blowing the fumes away, maybe, might be a small amount is drifting under the helmet.Appreciate your reply.
Warmest regards,
LOu

Happy 80th Lou. I wish you many more. You turned driver's license age when I was four months old. Good job on the splitter. Another milestone of sorts is you plan to USE that splitter at 80 years old.

Adrian Billheimer,
Thank you for your kind post. The original splitter came from a picture ( no blueprints). The first splitter we built is rated at 30 ton, this new one will be over 40-50 ton, building one will get you by a lot cheaper, most are running from $1700.00- 2300.00 for a good one. Ours will have around $1000.00-$1200.00 for parts and supplies, not counting the labor,so you can see there will be quite a savings. Figure when we are done we will have around lower side of $1200.00,but it should last for years. Our original one ( in grey color) has split over 4 to 500 cord of wood since new. We just wanted the second one in case one fails and one can stay at my daughters place. Saves from moving them around back and forth from home to daughters home.My other daughter who passed away loved working with firewood, think of her always especially when doing firewood. If you decide of building one,it just takes some time as we have more time than money, lol.Wishing you success if you decide to build one.
Warmest regards,
LOU

fixerupper,
Thanks for the Birthday wishes,Definitely going to use the splitter by the end of September ( Indian Summer).
Thats when we normally start cutting and splitting wood. Daughter found out firewood in 8' length went up to $110 a cord from last years $85.00. Everything goes up but the paycheck, lol.
Regards LOU

Steve,
Thanks for the Birthday wishes. All one can do is keep plugging away and things get done, keep positive thoughts and you will make 80,maybe by then they will make a powder to weld with just add water.lol.

LOU

gtractorfan,
Yes the welding is mostly done, except for adding different brackets and battery tray, etc, pump mounting, valve mount, cylinder bracket, and a throttle / key start panel, gas tank bracket. All the welding is done by the front of the 16X7 garage door with a fan beside me,no wire feed welder is used. Thanks for the reply,
LOU

El Toro,
It's a sweet age if you stay healthy, as I'm finding out. Both you and your wife are a couple of years older than I am, so stay healthy and together.

LOU

Jon,

MNGB,
Thanks for the reply.
The new splitter will be nice with electric start, beats pulling it over by hand at my age. Just turn the key and Varoom, off we go.
