Exhaust manifold studs installment

What is the best way to install exhaust manifold studs?

Do you torque them down until tight or on and off with the manifold so you know when the nuts are flush?

Thanks
Robert

Double nut them and tighten them down with the manifold off until they bottom out. Use the torque wrench once you've installed the manifold to tighten the nuts to spec.

Ok, thanks. That will work for the 2 center studs, but the outer 2 can't bottom out...

Stud holes on some tractors open into the water jacket.....those need something like Permatex #2 to seal the threads.

Yeh - I still use #2 after many years. I have better luck with it than anything else I've tried ....... including silicone concoctions :)

From an engineering standpoint, you (theoretically) get the maximum strength from a depth equal to the major diameter of the thread. So, for a 3/8-16 thread, it would need to be a minimum of 6 full turns into the head. More is fine, but 6 is enough for it (hopefully) not to pull out. However, this also assumes the condition of the threads is pristine - undamaged and not corroded.
