anyone out there have idea what could be problem on my toro zx5400 zero turn.left wheel not turning. Wouldn t steer put it up on blocks and left tire not turning.little bit if I really pull on handles.got stuck and used a pickup to pull up to dry ground.pulled very slowly.was working before that.thought we was being carefull.what could have happened.

Turns the wheel motor into a pump with no place for the oil to go. Probably have broken parts in wheel motor or relief valve is stuck open

Brings up a good question. I wanted to push my Toro zero turn a foot or two the other day, so I opened the bypass valves. The wheels still wouldn't turn. I started the engine, and there was no forward movement, as I expected with the valves open. Shut her down, and the wheels still wouldn't move.
I played with the rods, all the way in and all the way out, and the wheels wouldn't release. Is this normal?

Well the earlier posters have it pretty well figured out in that you should NOT tow any hydrostatic driven unit with the bypass being open. READ your owners manual to see how and where it is on your mower.
On your current problem. If your lucky you may have sheared a key in the drive motor. If your not lucky you may have broken the wheel motor internally as it was acting like a pump with no where for the oil to flow to. So it was locked up and some thing gave way under this unusual pressure.

The hydraulic shop that rebuilds my hydraulic cylinders has many ZTR's in his shop. I asked him once what's wrong with them. His reply, pumps and motors, pumps and motors. I then asked how long do pumps and motors usually last. He said depends on how they are used, usually 1-3000 hrs.
So if you can't figure it out, find a local hyd shop.
