Corn In Illinois

The corn here in Illinois is starting to tassle and shoot out the silk. They use to say you were doing good if your corn was "Knee High by the 4th of July". I can't believe how fast the corn has grown this year. In our area I know it's had plenty of rain though. We had another 1.5 inches yesterday.

Have seen a lot of corn around here (central Michigan,) that will have to work pretty hard to make knee high. My garden sweetcorn on the other hand, is crotch high to a normal person. Lots of corn got a late start here.

Mine has canopied. Good thing I got it sprayed a week ago Friday. It'd be too late now to get anything down underneath it.

Corn I saw in Montcalm County today around Entrican, I didn't think looked all that flashy. Everything else looked good. What would have just been planted in the last couple of days. Looked like planted with corn planter, just east of MSU research station west of Entrican?

I remember my dad saying the same thing, "Knee High by the 4th of July". I think it was a stretch too, I think he stretched the leaf up to his knee.
