Whistle Pig vs. Rin-Tin-Tin

My wife was out walking the other day and got a couple pics of an unknown varmint, at least in these parts. He looks a lot like a badger, but with softer, rounder features. As big as a good adult coon. I think it is a groundhog, will post a pic, hopefully soon. Anyway, we family-raise German Shepherds and she had two of them with her, a battle-hardened female and an 80lb. male pup, but didn't give the dogs the green light to catch it 'cause she didn't know what it was. So the I guess the question is, in an all out brawl, how would a groundhog stand up against say an adult sow coon?

Well I didn't search it but I'm pretty sure the raccoon is a predator to the groundhog. I have seen the Raccoons going after them anyway.

Ground Hogs eat veggies, don't think they would tackle a coon, other then to try to scare it away from their babies.

A couple of dogs that know how to work together? Pig has no chance. I had the best varmint team around - an old golden and his counterpart who was half his age. Nothing could stop them - even a coyote. The old boy died. She still does good but her new (two years old golden) younger brother hasn't learned it all yet. He gets bored with it too early.

She's gotten five owls out of the barn this year. I'm not sure what I will do when the old girl is gone.

I had an old dog that would take on any ground hog and win,, with in moments, a strong bite in the back of the neck, followed by a severe shaking and it's over with.. A coon is harder to deal with and in the water will drown most dogs...

Dad had a Newfoundland/ black Lab mix that sniffed a woodchuck the first time it encountered one. Well, that wood chuck latched onto the soft part of doggie's nose and would not let go. Dog finally shook it off his nose after quite a bit of yelping. Something snapped in him right then. He took it by the neck and shook the life out of it. Before that, he was just curious about other animals, after that, the only animal he didn't try to kill was mom's 2 cats. Got possums,
squirrels, a fox, raccoons, moles, rabbits, feral cats. Best dog dad ever had, had him from a week old rescue until he died 15 years later. Dad buried him on a hill overlooking the farm.

As long as the coon can not get the dog into water those dogs you have would make short order out of a coon. Shoot last night I let my dog out just to go after a coon. It got away form her but if my dog had got it it would be dead right now

By Raccoon is predator to Groundhog I mean the Raccoon will chase and try to eat the Groundhog. Groundhog defense seems to be run back to the hole . I have seen a crow push around a grounhog. Not good fighters.

My Border Collie saw a 18 pounder (weighed not estimated), She let me know it was in the yard. I ran toward it yelling You get out of Here (my dogs command to take it down. She ran full speed into it and had it by the neck in 3 seconds. The commotion caused the neighbors dog to (a young German Shepard) to assist. They stretched that varmint with structured jerks, tearing it into shreds. I had to calm them down to get it away from them. I didn't intrude till it was "longer", to avoid being bitten. I believe it is a function of the attitude of the dog, and its cammand ability. Jim

I had a male 15 inch beagle that had a confrontation with a ground hog. At first, they were yelling and posturing to each other. The beagle had the ground hog cornered, and the ground hog was snapping, hissing, and growling. After they were nose to nose for about 20 minutes - I came out to see what the commotion was - the ground hog snapped at the dog and nipped him on the ear. Something snapped in that dog, and he went after that ground hog, got him by the back just behind the neck, and shook it to death. He walked around the yard for a couple of days carrying that dead ground hog. Finally about the third day, I got it away from him and disposed of it.

Years ago I had 2 hound dogs (brothers) that made it there mission in life to rid the world of ground hogs, There wasn't one for 2 miles of home and they didn't like muskrats ether. It was something to watch the 2 of them work together to get one, They would lay all day at a hole (hidden) waiting for one to come out of the hole and then the fight was on! They would wait till it was 20 feet from the hole to make there move then they would circle it making sure it could not get back to it's hole and kept circling till the ground hog made a mistake and it was all over in short order. The bad thing was they would bring it back to the house to show me that they got one and leave it for me to burry it. One was bad enough but sometimes there would be 3 or 4 to do a day. They both had there battle scares and a few trips to the vet to get patched up after they tangled with a big old one but they did it till the day they died at 16 years old. Good dogs and I miss them everyday. Bandit

When I was a kid the dogs (collie mixes) always had 4 or 5 in or near the yard curing.

Mom took in a German Shepherd just before she left dad, the dog had a litter and dad was feeding 100 pounds of food a week. I took her out and shot her a ground hog and 50 pounds of food lasted nearly 2 weeks after that day.
