they were like puff ball sort of until they opened up

there are old mushroom pickers and there bold mushroom pickers. There are no old, bold mushroom pickers. or so they say. Bill

Larry, I believe you have a mushroom in the Amanitaceae group. Some of these are poisonous and deadly. I personally would not mess with it , it is not worth it. This group is either poisonous or unknown. If you want to eat wild mushrooms get a good book and an old mushroom expert as a friend!!!!

They look like mature winecaps based on color, gills, and annulus. Don't eat them unless you have an expert identify but winecaps are edible. Some say they have a meaty taste but to me they just taste like most mushrooms.

"TOAD STOOL". When I call them that it seems no one knows what I am talking about. That is all we ever called any mushroom we saw growing anyplace when I was a kid.

You should never depend on an old saying like that. You could get very sick from it. I took a short (3-day) mushroom class of sorts many years ago in a Canadian Provincial park. One of the things that they stressed there is that there are NO positive identifiers in the field based on gill coloring. Most of the field mushrooms are identified by where they grow, whether or not they had a "bulb" at the base, and finally by spore prints.
There are basically only FOUR mushroom types that are considered totally safe to eat. They are puffballs, shaggy mane, morels, and (I think - it has been a long time) oyster mushrooms. All others require expert identification to determine if they are safe to eat.

Bottom line here is that I would not eat them unless they are properly identified and found to be safe to eat. Otherwise, better to be safe(and ALIVE) than sorry.

Those things pop up here once in a while. Mom and Dad told us kids that they were poison, I took their word for it and didn't mess with them.

Here in Southern Nevada, you DON"T want to eat our mushrooms . . . and they're definitely NOT toad stools. LOL!
