Painting Burch doors?

Daughter wants to sand the urethane off Burch doors and spray paint them white. What kind of paint would you use? Water base, oil base? I wouldn't do a thing to the old ranch look of the house, but kids are kids, even if she is 35 years old.

I did this once. Prime them then spray with a good quality latex enamel. I used a Wagner sprayer on ours. Had to thin the paint a little to get it to spray right.

If the urethane is in good condition there is no reason to sand it off. Just use an exterior oil based enamel and paint over the urethane. All you would need to do is scuff sand it a little.

Agreed - but I'd suggest a little more effort on the prep work.

Sand it all to scuff it - use sanding sponges or pads to get any odd shaped decorative trim areas if there are any.

Then use a deglosser - or something like "wil-bond". Follow the directions!

Then prime.

Then paint.

Painting's a complete pain in the )#(*$#. Do it right so you only have to do it once.

Give the paint as much time as you reasonably can to fully cure. Doesn't take much to scratch soft paint while re-hanging a door.

I think you are a haricot if you paint good wood trim and doors. You can't buy the trim like that anymore. Burch doors are special order not, where they were standard back then. All the wood work in my old is stained and urethane. Why kids think white paint is great is beyond my lever of comprehension.
