Champ Forklift

Champ CB40S

We have a Champ CB40S forklift which we use in a small furniture/lumber business. Our former mechanic who has left the area used to check fluid levels and do general maintenance for us. We are now faced with doing some of this ourselves for awhile and don't know the proper lubricants to use on this old machine. Any advice for us? Thanks

Not familiar with that exact brand, but they basically have the same lube requirements.

Engine oil, diesel, gas, or propane, I would use 15w40 diesel oil.

Hydraulic oil, RO32 or RO46 will work.

Auto transmission, ATF fluid.

Gear case or manual trans, 80w90. Most auto trans share the differential oil.

Brakes and inching cylinder, if there is a fluid reservoir, use brake fluid.

Chassis grease fittings, chassis grease.

Engine coolant, 50/50 antifreeze/distilled water.

Battery, distilled water.

Steve did a good job on that with one exception .If it has an automatic , and I never saw one , it will use modern dexron /mercon atf. The differentials were always separate units just like a truck, and 80-90 gear oil is fine . If it is a straight stick with a reverser, take up the rite hand floor panel (4 bolts ) and you will see the square head pipe plugs or sq. recessed head on the side of the two gear boxes .Good time to grease the u-joints too ! If it has the shuttle and torque converter set up , that has a dipstick next to the battery box , again use Mercon /Dexron . There are several filters underneath it that need changing , A hyd filter , power steering and trans . Your engine could be a Continental F163 , a Perkins gas or diesel or some other special option . They are still in business in S. El Monte , Ca ( L.A ) . Parts are available from CHAMCO...Have your serial number ready ,it is riveted to the side of the battery box they had lots of options , so they can't help with many oem parts without it ....I've included my email if you need more info , I worked on them for many years .
