PTO shaft coupler repair question

FIL let the woods mower PTO end set on the ground for 3-5 years (9N wasn't running).

The lock/release pin completely rusted up. Took forever, some air tool oil, al little heat (not too much to cook the bearings), hammer/punch, grinder and finally goy the old pin out.

The new Wessler pin kit looks a bit different but the diameters are the same size and length.

Tried to put it in but it fought me all the way and it won't move freely. Got it back out without much effort.

I suspect I may have a bit more rust to try to get out of the hole but before I try to put it back in I was wondering if there a trick to putting these in? or maybe something else I'm missing?

Thanks.

The name is "Weasler". Either there's still some rust and debris in the hole, or you have the wrong kit, which is certainly possible because there's DOZENS of variations of those yokes/pins.

Use a small wire brush, such as is used to clean copper pipe for sweating, and clean up the pin bore area.

I recently discovered a new way to clean out holes like that. Take a drill bit a little smaller than the hole and wrap some crocus cloth around it and use it to remove the rust. It also works great when you install new throttle shaft bushing on carburetors and find the new shaft binds. A few of revolutions of the drill and it will slide right in without binding.
