V-8 Motor In A Tractor

Been thinking about putting a V-8 engine in a farm tractor, maybe for show purposes, but not quite sure where to begin, or what is needed. I have seen Allis-Chalmers with a Chevy V-8 that looked pretty cool. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

why limit yourself to a V8, how about a V12?

An international v8 from a truck or 815/915 combine is nearly a bolt in on an M. A neighbor did one years ago and it looked like it was factory since all the original tin fit.

Here is a D17 with a Chrysler 318 engine. No mufflers; straight off the exhaust manifold.

I have an F-12 with a 2.8L V6....and (JD 55)combine tires and wf from SC Farmall.......Thinking of putting a 65 GMC 305 V6 in an MD.Fun projact,go for it!

You could put a turbine in a tractor, just have to gear it down to a usable range for the tractor.

One of my brothers parade toys. GB Moline with Mopar 383.

Always wanted one of these, V-8 from the factory!

I would think one of the Oliver tractor would be pretty easy to put a V-8 in due to the way the clutch input shaft is set up

I suppose pretty much anything can be done, just a matter of how much custom fabrication you do. You just need to get the rotary output of the engine to the input of the tractor transmission and make sure the RPM isn't way out of whack, figure out the governor, controls and wiring. The theory isn't terribly complicated, but the devil is in the details.

If money were no object, a turbine would be outstanding, they would probably be fairly ideal for a tractor from the stand point of setting the throttle at a steady RPM where you are making good power and off you go, however, you won't necessarily have a lot of start up torque, which could be problematic (powershift trans needed?)

A rotary engine would be unique. A radial engine really neat. You could probably re-power a smaller tractor with a Harley engine, a 100 HP liquid cooled VRSC engine would make for a neat parade tractor.

Rich, one of the local, antique puller guys around here has an Oliver 88 with a built, Chevy small block 383. Pulls in the antique modified class and does quite well. The Chevy V8 looks like it belongs in there.

Hello spudm,

Here is another choice, 572 Cu.In. and automatic transmission. While pulling the only thing that stopped this Oliver was the end of the track! Take a look at all the weights. What you see times four in the back axle. Some on the front as well,

Guido.

I started farming ans still use two Olivers powered by mere Chev 454's burning propane.
They made 150 PTO hp at 2400 rpm and ran cheap on 35 cent per gallon summer fill LP
