I dont remember seeing any of these on the roads years ago

If I remember correctly, Packard also made a Golden Hawk during that same time. I think that they were virtually, if not literally, identical. Studebaker also made a Silver Hawk but I don't remember what was the difference between the Silver and the Golden. Beautiful cars. Way before their time.

Tom, as I recall, The Silver Hawk did not have the supercharger. I'm sure there were other differences and I'm not a Studebaker expert. I knew a man in the town I lived in as a teenager that had a full collection of Silver and Golden Hawks. I always wondered what happened to those.

My brother had a '57 Silver Hawk. Black with red interior. I think they had the same engine, but the SH wasn't supercharged. Paxton? supercharger on the GH, if my memory serves me right. The SH was quick - I always wondered what the GH would do. Those little Studes had a low geared rear end to go with the three speed OD transmission, and they'd surprise a lot of hot rodders. Especially pulling away uphill from a stoplight. They had a "hillholder" feature that held the brake until you started engaging the clutch. Nice pictures - thanks Larry!

Those cars were made in the mid 1950s. In 1954, Studebaker and Packard merged. For 1957 and 1958, Packards were re-badged Studebakers. That was one of the worst mergers in automotive history. Packard was a financially sound company with good cash reserves while Studebaker was drowning in red ink and on the verge of bankruptcy. Studebaker dragged Packard into financial trouble, and only survived because luxury cars were not selling well at the time. As we all know, neither of them survived into the 1990s.

A neighbor kid a year older than me in school had a black one in the late 60's. It had the 289 but I don't remember much else about it.

Back in the early 60s the neighbor had a Black Hawk. He was the head mechanic on ESSO tankers. Took his baby to a body shop to repair a little scrape. The car was parked along with several other cars beside the shop. Long story short...The shop was next to the Third Neshanic river. Yup one He)) of a rain storm. Cars were totally under and his insurance only gave him blue book. SOBB tears!

I used to have a Studebaker, but she is divorcing me! I sure have had to listen to that coach building families genology!
