Kinda OT Yard light

I saw the post earlier about yard lights, so I figured I'd ask. 2 or 3 years ago, I needed a new light on the front of the machine shed. Went to Menards and got what I think is a metal halide light. It has a small bulb and makes a very bright, white light. Lately it comes on and as soon as it gets almost fully brite, it goes out and starts over. Usually waits a few minutes after going out before it starts the cycle over again. Can the bulb be the problem even when it lights up? Thanks, Chris

On my barns, when ballast costs get too close to the cost of a new light, I gut the fixture and switch them over to 2100 lumen 32 watt fluorescent. We don't have much single digit temps during the winter so they start and last a long time. I've done it on 175W mercury vapor and 70W sodium.

You might consider a new fixture. The new 175 watt metal halide bulb cost $55.00 through Menards. The new LED fixtures that would replace that one in a RAB fixture has a 100,000 hour life all other companies say only 50,000 hours rating.

Yes, it likely needs a new bulb. This is normal behavior when the bulb reaches end-of-life. Good explanation and troubleshooting link below. If you keep using it once it starts flickering, good possibility that it will burn up the ignitor as well.
