That magic hour

When it is right before dark and the temperature starts dropping and the old 400D starts really making good power. Plowed dow about 10 acres of 3'+ tall grass and have about 5 more to go weather permitting. Just something about that last hour of the day that makes the old tractors really stand up and run. Hope everyone had a good day.

Yep That Magic Hour. Sun is going down, everything seems to run a little better, look back over the field at how much you have done. Day well spent job well done, and if your very lucky like I am a loving wife preparing supper for you. Yep true Magic

The old 105 combine I used to run had a little more oomph at sunset too. That 4020 gas engine had it's tongue hanging out full time with a six row corn head on front. In the evening I could go a whopping .10 MPH faster, from 2.5 all the way up to 2.6 or thereabouts. Plowing sounds like it's more fun tho.

Use to work for a neighbor when I was a kid. He had a 730 JD gas that you could lite a cigarette on the manifold as it glowed red hot.
Pulled 4/14 mounted JD plow. Manifold, exhaust pipe and muffler were red in the dark evening.

Have the loving wife, normally I do the majority of the cooking. Since I was in the field she ordered pizza. Does that count? But still magic!

I am pulling a 311 Fast Hitch (3-14) since it is 20+ year old sod. Come spring or this fall if I follow beans with wheat I will pull the 412 Fast Hitch. (4-14) The old Farmall 400D actually started to run a little cooler as the sun went down. Although she was still radiating a ton of heat. Even though I have mostly Farmall's my favorite JD is still a 720/730 diesel. Just love the way those sound under a load!

Make a tank to hold dry ice at fits over and conforms to the intake manifold and you could have the same power when it is hot.

Yep, the best is at sunset as your shadow strectches long over the field, over what you've done, sa you head for the barn.

Reminds me of my young days when my sisters had riding horses. Horses were tired going away from home, but when you headed home you couldn't hold 'em back. Tractor's thinking "I'm headed for the shed"?

Was disking with my LA Case after dark trying to get wheat planted before a coming rain. Friend jumped on the platform with a flashlight to help me see. Did not need it with all the flames coming out the straight pipe. Pipe was red hot. Right behind was a 620 JD pulling the drill. That was a fun evening.
