My old chevy truck quit on me

I was leaving a discing job today, the truck started acting like it was running out of gas. I drained some gas out of the tractor. That wasn't the problem. I had this happen before, it turned out to be the condenser. I changed the condenser, and I was on my way two hours later. Stan

Very nice 37chief you can probably sit on the wheel well in the engine compartment and work on it as well. You cant do that on a new one!
 
Beautiful old Chevy. They just don't exist rust-free like that here in Michigan. And like my 1956 M38a1 Jeep, when it quits running, I can figure it out and fix it with simple tools. Allis looks good too.
 
Rust isn't a big problem out here in California. Don't get me wrong, we do have some rusty cars. The truck was bought new in 54 by Dad, and has been garaged all of it's life. I had a M38a1 it was a good little jeep, if you didn't need to go over 50 mph. I still have some body parts if you get out to Calif. you can have them. Stan
 
I can't believe Chevrolet would sell a vehicle that only works for 60 years and then goes to giving trouble.

Just _Terrible_!

Maybe it's time to consider a newer truck like a'56 or a '57.


Ok, now that the fun is out of the way, what is your system for loading? It looks like the tractor is on some kind of ramps or something. Does the bed tilt or move?
 
I've got a much more modern truck - my gmc is a 58. It quit one day on the way up the ramp to the elevator. I crawled right in and stood on the frame rail and switched out the fuel pump. I had the new one, I just hadn't had time to do it. You'd be surprised how fast you can do it when you have a line behind you. I think my load ticket stated something like 21 minutes including dumping wheat.

Why is your filler on the passenger's side? I've got a 56 Chevy and the 58 gmc - both drivers side fill.
 
Very nice and well preserved old Chevy. I had to tow my International home today as it quit on me too and I had nothing for tools to check it out. It has been running terrible with the plugged idle circuit in the Holley carb and finally it just seemed to run out of fuel and would not re-start. Too late and tired to check tonight so tomorrow.
 
To unload I just back the tractor off. If I back up slow the cab comes down easy. other times it comes down hard. I try not to do that. Dad the same thing for years. Stan

I really didn't give the filler much thought. It has always been that way. Cars with fillers on the right side is a little more difficult at the gas station I would think. Stan

Those are some priceless pictures you've got there. That's a whole lot of machine on the back of that truck. I'd like to see some of the newer trucks out there do that.

lot of the pre-55 stuff has the filler on the passenger side. 30-40s cars only had a key hole on the passenger side door handle. The reason was.....it was safer to enter the car from the passenger side...back when parallel parking on busy streets was more common. Could also be the reason the gas filler was on the passenger side. If you ran out of gas on the side of the road it would be safer to be on the passenger side adding gas.
