Grinder Mixer

I have a New Holland 353. After clearing out the blockage in the auger I created by adding the minerals too quickly, it's back in action. However, before I mix and grind again, I was wondering when is best to add the minerals. Instead of adding them through the mineral box, can I add them with the corn or soybeans via the intake auger? Also, is the dust collector cover supposed to be open when milling?
Thanks

Is the auger bunged up so you can't add them through the hopper where you're supposed to? If I remember right, you tried dumping them in without it running didn't you? That hopper's there for a reason. Pour it in slowly with it running if the auger is in good shape. I suppose it'll end up in the same place if you dump it in the mill with it running slowly. The auger underneath will be running and it should run right through the screen.
My 354 doesn't have a cover on the dust collector,so since there isn't one at all,I'd advise to have it open I guess.

As Randy said, make sure the grinder is running when you pour in the minerals. I would suggest grinding a portion of the grain into the mixer, then put in your minerals and other suppliments and then fill the grinder up. I think I still have a new auger for a 354. Don't know if it fits the 353, but if you do need an auger check the NH part #'s to see if they are the same. You can also remove the auger and weld new flites on the thing. It's a miserable job to remove the danged thing but we have done it and rebuilt augers. Don't know as I have ever seen a cover on a dust collector. Not for a NH anyway.

One other suggestion. Never, ever dump ingredients into the hopper without the screen down. If you get an old feed bag wound up in that auger you will 'bout go crazy trying get that thing unwound! Grinder/mixers were NOT designed to be mechanic friendly!!!!!

The concentrate hopper was not added as an afterthought....for a very good reason. Vitamins, and especially protein, are degraded by the heat of grinding when you run it through a hammermill. Can literally destroy all of their feed value.

I normally added supplements while the bin auger was running, but if you"re shoveling grain by hand, add them after a good portion of the grain is in. Adding at the beginning, it may stay at the bottom of the tank rather than be mixed into the feed.

I have a JD, but they all have about the same parts.

I do all of my grinding and then add the
concentrate/mineral to it. I add it through the
mineral auger and at the end I pour in one five
gallon bucket of the previous week's feed to the
mineral hopper to push all of the mineral through
and into the tub. I don't want any salt sitting in that
auger tube. I let the tractor mix at a slow idle for
about 10 minutes and then put it in the feed wagon.
I had trouble with mine where if I would dump a
whole bag of concentrate in the hopper it would
jump a tooth on the drive chain. Turns out the
bearing on the other end of that auger was out
letting the shaft wiggle when it got a big load. I'd be
willing to bet my bean crop (that still isn't in) that you
have a bearing out you haven't found. With worn
flighting it should be easier for the tractor as it won't
get all of the product whiped off the edge of the
tube.

I don't know what to tell you about the dust
seperater. Mine is always uncovered but only blows
dust when grinding (the machine is always parked
inside). I wouldn't run the mineral through the mill. It
will turn it into dust which the animals are more
likely to waste.
