3-53 detroit governor problem

i have an old rough terrain forklift with a 3-53 detroit. I normally am not around it;just some REAL dummies. i was there today and noticed it was idling at about 1500 rpm. i asked and was told it started doing it about about 6 months ago. well, the employees are ex's and I need to fix it. probabvly a hung governor;what do I need to do. this is a machine that's only got maintenance, alternators and starters for about 20 years. i own other 53 series but never have to work on them. We have the hood off, motor cleaned . how do we check out the governor? Is it the same as a 71 series? Is it time to buy a manual? HELP!!

yes on manual check any linkage on machine then check for any shaft damage in it. Has someone fooled with the adjustments on it??? Also look for leaking blower seals.

Hello carl reitnauer,

Remove the throttle rod from the top of the governor first. If the throttle is the problem it may be as easy as that. At least this way you will have eliminated that part of the system. You should take the valve cover off and take a peek. If one of the injector rack is hanging up it will do just that, keeping all the injectors in. Run the engine with the cover off and see if you can push it back to idle that way. Some things you can try, as you say it may be time for the manual. Also you can try backing off the buffer screw, it may be too far in and won't let the lever back to idle. Although when the buffer screw is too far in the engine usually takes off for the moon!!!

Carl Guido is right ,, 90% of the time when you remove the valve cover you will find the little rack thing on one of the injectors is binding. Usually take your thumb and hand work it back and forth with little wd40 or sometimes there is a circle spring there on the end of the rack control that the end breaks off, you will be able to see that also. Anyway first thing is ease the valve cover off and you want even have to replace the cover gasket.

I have seen that on 71 series engines, 53 uses the same setup.
The little 3 piece torington thrust bearing where the governor weights touch the governor weights fails. once that bearing is gone, it idles fast like that and quickly converts the weights and fork into iron dust.
