Swather Question

I have a chance to buy a fairly nice looking but certainly well maintained John Deere Model 2420 Selfpropelled Swather. Can anyone tell me if they are a descent machine. I only bale 30 - 50 acres a year, but mostly waterways and such and I'm tired of always looking behind at my hydra-swing and navigate the waterways.

It's a diesel engine, cab and air. Any pros or cons to this machine? Thanks in advance - Bob

Its just old technology. Its a decent machine, I personally never really liked them. But if its cheap enough and the head, cutterbar, motor and pumps all work properly, it'd probably be a nice addition. If you can, test it out. If a pump is out, it will take some serious coin to fix it.

Not answering your question directly, but having had a New Idea Uni System, thinking I was buying the greatest thing since sliced bread,I'd never buy another piece of self propelled equipment except a combine. If something happens to any part of the engine or drive train, you're dead in the water. If something happens to a tractor, pull the drawpin and hook another one on. For no more than you're cutting,it's just a novelty that'll get old in a hurry when little things start holding you up from getting any work done.

Just my 2 cents, take it for what it's worth.

Here is my swather, can't remember the number but it sure is slick to cut hay with.Like any machine if it is worn out leave it where it is, if you can buy it right, and it seems not too bad... well why not.
