Why I don't argue much with my wife

We did the memorial day parade today with the 4H group. I drove a tractor, but my wife had to help a friend with his horses.

He pulls a civil war era cannon in the parade. But his horses were into the leftover cornfield and were all fired up with excess energy.

My wife helped harness them, drive them around to burn off some energy, then walked along with them to keep them in line.

Clearly not a city girl.

I know the culture these days is tennis shoes, sliders, flip flops, sandels for just about any occasion. But around livestock, I want my boots and blue jeans. Probably would not help much with a horse foot such as you've shown, but it would help some.Nice looking team, I'm sure you're wife is whispering something to the horse. gobble

I guess our parade was canceled, was damp but not really raining.

They had some excitement yesterday, fella had to be hauled to the hospital.

Interesting thing in my town also has a battery, with a cannon. The town was given the cannon during the Dakota war, and kept it up ever since.

Where are you at?

Paul

Actually she went to the parade expecting to walk with the 4h kids, not wrestle horses. Hence the outfit!

(our friend's house is right at the start of the parade).

Well I will commend your wife as being brave and then say your friend sure took a chance taking a fired up team in a parade.

Five years ago there was a team them ran off during a July fourth parade in Bellevue, IA. One lady died and around 30 people where injured. There have been several lawsuits filed against the owner of the team, even though his wife was the lady that died.

Horses around groups of strange people are just an accident waiting to happen. My Grand Daughters have wanted to take their horses in some parades. I have been 100% against that. It is too dangerous for them and anyone else in the parade. I asked my son if he was ready to lose all he has if something happens.

I think many of the local parades have rules now that any horse in a parade has to have a handler on the ground with a lead rope/strap on the horse. Some have just banned horses from the parades as the parade sponsors have insurance trouble with horses in the parade.

I know someone was helping load draft horses in a trailer and one accidently stepped on his foot, yup, it was crushed.

Yep people think being around some 1500lb animals that can't possible be controlled if the animals decide to run off is fine but a kid riding on a parents lap on a tractor
going 4 MPH is dangerous and the 'authorities' need to be called.

Looks as though the horse was just balking with both front feed being drawn back. The pictures don't show any striking out with the front feet. Great pictures! They would look great framed in an office.

These horses do constant tours in nearby Worcester, weddings, parties, lots of events. He works them constantly and knows them very well.

They burned off all that energy well before the parade started, and my wife walked along to further ensure they stayed in control.

And the horses DID just fine in the parade.

There's no guarantee with animals of course, and accidents do happen from time to time, but I'd hope we ban parade floats before horses:

I'd rather have my kids around the horses or on the tractor than on an ATV. ATVs are a death sentence for kids as far as I can see, but I've only picked up a dozen bodies or so.

After reading some of the replies it seems if someone gets hurt or killed because of someone else not paying proper attention we should ban all activities where someone was hurt or killed.

Good bye base ball, foot ball, swimming, boating, and gymnastics to start with for a few. And for sure riding in a car. How many are people and kids are killed or hurt riding with someone in a car compared to the other before named activities??

I would guess we would only want banned those activities that we are not going to be interested in doing or watching ourselves.

Good pics. Can't tell if the horse on the left is laughing at his team mate for being brought down by a gal or if he's telling him to mind his manners in front of the lady. lol Thanks for sharing.

OK, so you don't argue with your wife because you are afraid she's going to hitch you to a wagon or something?

Great pictures!

I've been around work horses all my life and have seen the most gentle easy going horse get spooked over some crazy thing and once spooked NO ONE can control them.Trusting a horse is like trusting a bull sooner or later it'll backfire on you.

yeah I love that one -

having young children, all I can think of when ooking at that picture is that he's embarrassed by and belittling his teammate "look at him, he's still wearing his stupid clover sticker, he's not even Irish, he's Belgian".

(left over from the st. Patrick's day parade).

Much effort involved in doing these things. I sure do appreciate the people that donate their time, work and expense towards these civic activities. I sometimes wonder if maybe this is much more demonstrated in New England than in the rest of the Country.

Why cannot a fellows post just be appreciated . Are lectures always necessary. Wonder if there were any auto accidents by spectators driving to parade?

I couldn't say Prawn Farmer, I've always lived here so I don't know how it is elsewhere. Maybe it's something I take for granted. I've always been in a memorial day parades in some capacity, either as a kid or a parent. I assumed everybody did it.

Great pix! Thanks for sharing. And yeah, I LOL'ed at the pic where it looks like the one is yelling at the other to knock it off and the other is putting his head down in shame. As for the shoes, I always wear steel toed boots at the barn but I've been caught a couple of times in tennis shoes when the wife asks me to hold our horse or graze it. Always very careful when that happens and mindful of where his feet are in relation to mine.

I'll show my Dakota igmorance. Dakota War: where and when was that. Are you talking about the Sioux uprising that started in MN?

you are wise ,,,lol .... she is too.... and the horse pix are awesome ... we celebrate ed here with a tribute to our fallen soldiers ceremony and usually a parade .... for the 1srt time in30 yrs rain canceled the parade , it will be on 4th of july

I may have told this before: My mother said one lady she knew drove a horse and buggy into the local little town.(This was before World War I) The horse ran away. The lady held the reins tight, controlled the horse and got it heading down the road. She gave it it's head and applied the whip to make it run more, then again when it showed signs of tiring to give the horse the idea that running away just caused more work for it.

You do know a horse knows exactly where they are putting a foot. Front or rear. :)^D
I have three I feed side by side. If I don't feed the one first he steps on my foot. I bark his name with NO and he moves it. Disrespect! My horses are mini's so they don't cause actual damage to a foot, still does not feel good. Like two year old kids, If they can get away with something they will. If they can't they will still try every now and then to see if your paying attention.

Makes me wonder if the left horse is a mare. It and your wife look to be in complete control, the guys in the cart looked scared like they might fall out and the left horse just needed schooled can't tell if it's a gelding or not.

Yea, Dakota Uprising I meant to say. Felt like a war to my ancestors, they took the brunt of it. Much of it was a few miles north of my moms home place, and a few miles west of dads place. New Ulm got to be the focal point of the end game of it.
