What to do to get rid of Japanese hornets?

I was out at the tractor shed this morning. I was trying to get the battery charger on my Oliver 66, and something hit me on the side of the head. Upon further inspection, I noticed it was a Japanese hornet going into a vacant birdhouse. What can I use to kill them. If I use the over the counter wasp and hornet spray, they just land and wipe it off and keep going. Yes, I know that fire would be best, but this is on the side of the tractor shed. Also, when is the best time to spray/kill them? I know they fly at night. The best time I can think of is while it is raining. If they're anything like honey bees, probably 90% will be on the nest at that time. Thanks for the help, Todd.

Hi, anyway to just move the old bird house? Put it in a
more suitable place for flames to happen just in case
they find it and return. Ed will

Todd,

Brake kleen will work better than anything you

can buy , put the straw on the nozzle and have fun.

Brake kleen will shoot 8 to 10 ft and will take them

out of the air (flying) if you can hit them . Makes fun

target shooting with the can.

I have heard that if you build a small fire in the yard at night, they will go to the light and burn up.
I know they will go to a light at night.

Are you sure, Jap hornets? Those giant things? Sure they aren't just run of the mill hornets? Either way, this is not a 1950's foreign film. They die just like our bugs.

CRC (or other) Electro Motive Electrical parts cleaner in a spray can is instant death. A finger sized bumble will stop flying and bounce on the floor if it just flys into a small cloud of the stuff. Brake cleaner is not bad either as noted below. Jim

Have had them in an attic and under the edge of a roof. They build a nest out of paper, but around here it is reddish to light grey.

After watching that I think I would be careful getting rid of them. The best thing to do is get a good exterminator.

I don't know if Japanese hornets are it the US but I think what you have are European hornets. Look like a giant yellow jacket with s little orange at the base of the wings. They usually aren't real aggressive but they are active at night.

I would use Sevin dust. I have had good results on bees and wasps. Just splash some dust around the entrance to their nest, they will track it in and wipe out the colony. Approach when they are more dormant...my bees and wasps seem not to be active at night....just use a flashlight to find your way, use a small scoop of dust and fling it at and around the entrance. Sevin dust affects their nervous system and is available at garden supply stores. It is also used for dusting cabbages and garden stuff to knock out various critters.

I took the penalty on the golf course when my ball landed in a trap, which had 3-4 of these circling and going into holes in the sand.

They absolutely do not care if you shoot them with any sort of bee/wasp killer. Stuff that drops other wasps without hesitation I've emptied half a can on these, and they simply shake it off and fly away.

Fortunately, they're not terribly fast. If you're quick enough, it's possible to get them with a tennis racket. They're the size of a small humming bird.

I'm a bee keeper. I've had hundreds of honey bee's on me at once. It doesn't bother me at all, and other than a few events where i've been stung a few times, it's largely harmless. These things instill fear in me.

kinda reminds me of: The Screamapillar is easily identified by its constant screaming - it even screams in its sleep. The Screamapillar is the favorite food of everything, is sexually attracted to fire, and needs constant reassurance or it will die.

Down here in La. they're called Cicada Killers. They nest in a protected hole in the ground, such as under a porch or shed. Not a colony---one hole, one bug. They catch cicadas and carry them to the hole, where they stuff them in to feed larvae. That's a sight to see when one of those things is flying around hauling a cicada which is about the same size---as someone said, about as big as a hummingbird. Remember when they used to transport the space shuttle atop a 747? That's kinda what it would remind you of.

IaLeo is correct. Sevin dust will take care of them. Use the 10% if you can find it. 5% is common for gardens. They will take it to the nest. Dust anything they can get in to.

dang
2" long, 3" wingspan?
410.....pull!

like said, any garage chemical you have on the shelf is probably stronger than modern wasp spray.
Lotta household cleaners work pretty good too on a single.
a weak sevin mix sprayed where wasps/hornets like to nest will usually have them find another spot.
Won't work on an existing nest of course unless you like a good fight.

What about a Pyrethrin based spray? Its quite effective on every other kind of wasp or hornet.

This particular hornet is one threatening looking insect, thankfully the wasps we find in wood of similar size are nothing like these. You'd be a in a bad situation if you ever got that pheromone on you.

Wonder how they compare to the bald or white faced hornet in aggression?

they are attracted to a light at night found that out the hard way,we were setting up a portable light for a night job they begin flying around none of us knew what they were at the time, course I was the lucky one to encounter one cost me a swollen hand, after the job was over it still was over and hour till daylight so we opted to wait in the trucks and complete the work instead of coming back, guess what one had gotten in the truck after the interior light guess who got 2 more stings to the back of the head before it got daylight made for a long day.

I also nominate Sevin dust. Around where they go in and out. Also we have had good results with a 'bug zapper' light. They were flying all around a back door light a few years ago. We set the bug zapper with the blue type tube light at the door and turned off other light. Next morning: counted over 150 dead hornets.

Todd- where in NC are you? I am 20 miles SW of Winston-Salem, off I 40.

I am watching a show on Animal Planet right now titled "killer hornets from hell" about these things. Theay are a serious problem and breed insanely fast. If this is really Asian Giant Hornets in the USA, this is a big deal and you should call your county and state Ag depts.
