1948 8N Ford Tractor Sleeve.

What do I need to measure in order to order the right sleeve for my 8n tractor, The old sleeve came totally apart and is in the oil pan., I measured the cylinder wall and it looks like 3"263 Thousands., The cylinder wall and piston and rings all look fine.

My experience was that the sleeves came in two different thicknesses. The early tractors used a .04 sleeve and the .09 was used in the later 8n. If you measure the thickness of the sleeve or check the sn of your tractor you should be able to get the correct sleeve. Of course you may have a tractor engine that was bored out to take the thick sleeve instead of the thin ones.

8N Ford engines built prior to approximately mid 1951 has .040 steel sleeves. Those built thereafter had .090 cast iron sleeves.

Note: Many early 9/2/8N engines have been bored to accept the .090 cast iron sleeves because machine shops do not want to risk damaging the this wall steel sleeves upon installation.

Being that the sleeve is in the pan, the most likely cause
is the bore in the block is no longer a press fit. This
allows the sleeve to slide up and down and break the flange
off , when it comes down the crank makes little pieces
of it. The counter bore is most likely bad and needs a
counter bore repair insert. AND what ever you do don't
buy a genuine ford gasket as it does not pass over the
flange to hold it tight, Mccord does.
If the counter bores are not even and within spec , you
may need to plane the deck and recut the counter bores.

Thanks George
I believe you hit the nail on the head., Let me ask you George is there any way I can fix this thing that it will last me a few more years, I am 72 yrs old and sure can't maneuver as I once did. I don't use the old tractor much anymore just brush-hog a small pasture now and then and love joy riding. I'm not lazy George I just not a young man anymore. Thanks for your help. [email protected]. NO need for a bunch of $$$$. Install the appropriate new sleeve and stick it in place with some Locktite sleeve retaining compound.

DL,

You can try bob's idea with the locktite, good possibility

that it will work . Just make sure you don't use genuine ford

head gasket.

I'm 71 and still have machine shop , got a pacemaker/defib

a week and a half ago.

Thanks George I have only one more question Where can I find a McCord Head Gasket??, I spent hours on the net looking for one yesterday. Thank You George and I sure hope you do well after your surgery, God Bless

Thank You Bob for your help, I didn't know they made a loctite just for that, I will go to my parts store and see if they have it, I sure hope it isn't as hard to find as the McCord head gasket. Thank You Bob for your help, Bless you Sir.

McCord is now only in canada because federal mogul wanted to

push the fel pro line which has wider coverage , but sets

do not contain many of the needed gaskets. My next choice

would be victor which is part of clevite.
