Finally a good day in the hayfield...pics

The last couple of seasons have been really hard. Numerous breakdowns, tractor, tedder, and square baler. Some of it piddly stuff, some of it kinda of expensive and painful. Well I cut on Wednesday, had some rain Thursday morning and day, the. A beautiful past 3 days. Had one little hick up with the tractor yesterday, but other than that, everything work perfect. Including the new to me Hesston 540 round baler, granted it was just six rolls to start with, but I was impress. I thought baled much better than the neighbors Vermeer first generation rebel. The New Holland 570 baled right at 600 bales and didn't miss the first tie, best it's ever done since I've owned it. Here's a few pics of some happy equipment, happy hay ground, and happy hay customers.

Looks like you have a good crew picking up hay. It would appear that your selling directly out of the field??? That would make it easier if you can get the weather to work for everyone.

Your round bale looked pretty good. I would put on a little more twine to keep it together better. I am used to the look of mesh wrapped bales. LOL

Glad it worked out well for you. Mowing this early means you should get some real good second cuttings.

That is a really pretty place, love the woods around the field and the curving rows of hay.

And a Ford/NH 30 Series too, seems strange to me to see one without a cab.

Nice job, nice hay, handled the curves nicely, nice weather, nice to have your customers there to help in getting the squares up.
Congrats.

What I want to know is how did you convince your customers that the rain didn't fall on the hay?

Beautiful hay, beautiful day! What part of Ky are you in? Your weather sounded like mine, I am in eastern middle Tn. I baled a little saturday and if the rain holds off I should finish what I have down this morning. Lee

Are those people buyers/customers or helpers? That's the biggest windrow I've ever seen. How many feet of cut is raked up there?

Yep. Selling directly in the field. That's how it's done around here, mostly. I put 2 or 3 wraps of twine on each notch on the baler. For some reason I've noticed hesston bales aren't hardly as smooth as other bales. But for $4200, I'm not complaining.

2 are old faithful customers that have been with me for years. They know if I say it's good they can trust me. One of the others was from 2 counties over and didn't know it had rain on it till they got there and I told them...they said it was better hay than what they bought last year and it hadn't been rain on. The other guy was just desperate....

Those are the buyers. I didn't touch the first bale, sold everything in the field. That NH 570 likes big fat windrows. I was baling in 2nd gear at about 1500 rpm, 540 pto is about 1800. Baler and tractor both were happy. The windrow about 3 and half passes with a NH 256, so probably in the 25ft range.

Many years ago I had hay get rained on when a front came through a day earlier than predicted. I had a lot of it baled before it rained. I took samples from both the rained on and not rained on and had them tested. This was early June and the difference was very slight, only about a ten percent drop in protein and RFV. So it doesn't hurt early cut hay very much but it is still hard to convince the horse people, LOL.
