Shifting ford 1710 PTO

I have a new to me 1710 1983 I tried to put the pto in gear with the trans. and the shuttle in neutral but it ground gears. I had to turn off the engine then shift the pto in before restarting. I believe the owners manual say's trans. in neutral and clutch in I thought I followed those instructions ok, I even put the shuttle in neutral and it still wouldn't go in. Am I doing something wrong? I am used to 2n's and 8n's. I just finished changing a 7 foot ford sickle bar over to screws and nuts with all new sections, high rise hold downs and rock guards with help from this sight. BTW I bought the FO 44 service manual and have the original owners manual as well as owners manuals for the sickle bar mower and the 770 loader. So with help from here and manuals I should be in good shape. But shifting that PTO has me puzzled.

I have a 1900 and I believe they both have the dual stage clutch. You really have to push the clutch all the way down quite hard to get the PTO disk to disengage. Also if you have too much free play in the clutch pedal you won't be able to get the PTO disk to disengage. I have seen that be the problem with those models of tractors more than once. So check the free play in clutch pedal, but don't get it too tight so that the throw out bearing is riding on the main clutch fingers all of the time.

Ford 2-stage clutches usually have 2 holes in the linkage, if the pin is in the longer hole, you won't be able to depress the clutch enough to disengage the PTO.

You may have to adjust the PTO second stage of the clutch if you can't get it to release with the free play adj. There should be a large hole in the cover for this. Ron Mn

I have a 1310 that has the same problem--my research showed that the secondary clutch linkage can be adjusted by removing a cover on the right side of the transmission--however i have a loader too and its right behind the vertical loader frame---so i start it with the pto engaged-after the engine has been warmed up

Thanks for the replies I will check out the adjustment, the tractor is an hour away so I won't get to it until next weekend. It has been a learning experience so far I changed the oil/oil filter, hydro filter and fuel filter but forgot to turn the fuel back on before starting so I learned how to bleed the fuel pump oh well lesson learned.

Whch transmission do you have? Do you have 2 shifters on top of the transmission, or do you have one on top of the transmission, and one on the steering column, left hand side?

I would guess you have one on the column, one on the transmission.

Pushing the clutch pedal all the way in, until your toes stretch out, the pto will release. if you depress it only until the tractor stops moving, you aren't in the second stage.

push it all the way down and if you still can't engage the PTO, leave it in gear on the transmission and on the column. roll to a stop, or use brakes. Push the clutch all the way down beyond the floor board, and it will slip in. You might have the second stage locked up. In which case, you shut tractor off, engage PTO, leave foot completely as far down as it will go, turn tractor on. Then if pto is spinning, engage equipment to the ground with your foot still all the way down and let the tractor lurch and belch. Hold this position until the pto stops. That would be the second stage frozen. so you have to put a load on it to unfreeze the pto clutch stage.

Hope it works out.

I do have the shifter on the column I believe called the shuttle shift is that correct. I will try your suggestions and hope it works thanks.
