Nekked sheeps (sorry, no pictures)

Probably wouldn't get it passed the censors anyway!

Thanks to our shearer, Lisa Truman from Indiana. She sheared 38 Shetland ewes Saturday, 22 Shetland rams and wethers before noon today - before it started sprinkling. No wet sheep to shear! True, she did have a good pit crew, always had the next sheep ready. Sheep also got hooves trimmed and their vaccinations. To make it more difficult, her commercial shearer machine is down, she used her Shearmaster and my two alternately so they had time to cool down!

Add to that, son and I baled a load of hay yesterday.

Would anyone be upset if we took it easy for a few minutes this afternoon?

Wow, and I used to be pooped after helping shear a dozen sheep total!

Yeah, go ahead and take a break.

2...3...4...Okay, break's over, everybody back on their head!

I was pooped after only TWO , but then I was cutting with 100 year old hand-shears, sheep that didn't want to co-operate, and no help to hold them while I sheared & trimmed hooves.

All I hadda do was nab 'em, tip 'em up on their butt and hand 'em over to the shearing lady.

Did have one ram that did NOT like to be sheared. He was a handful, but the shearing lady said I'd be more hindrance than help if I tried to help her hold him so I just stood back and watched her rassle that bugger. Always gave them a little tip on top of their fee for that.

I've since switched to Katahdins which are a hair sheep. They just shed. And the ram has learned that if he's nice to me, I'll give him a good grooming/scratching a couple of times a day. Must itch like crazy when they're shedding. The first few times he came charging across the barnyard for a good scratch it made me a little nervous, but he's learned to slow down when he gets close.

Worst part is, the ewes want to be groomed too, but if one of them comes up to have me grab a few handfuls of loose hair, the ram gets all bent out of shape and bullies his way in between us.

Apparently, I'm only supposed to groom him...

Use to help Dad and a and a partner. It was hard to say ahead wrapping the wool and catching the sheep, then loading it all up and on to the next place. On all the wool that was keep for sale would fill a 2 and 1/2 car garage.

Fawteen:

Be careful, the Ram sees you as another ALPHA MALE and a rival for the Ewes attention; and he can become increasingly aggressive towards you. Best to pen him up before giving attention to the Ewes.

Yup. He's pretty passive 10 months of the year, even lets the lambs eat out of his dish when I grain them.

October and November, I keep a sharp eye on him. He's never offered to whack me, but I don't trust him any further than I could throw him and he weighs 250+ so that ain't far!
