Been playing with the idea of getting another "OLD" truck as I'm have difficulties keeping these two old beaters running....'98 and a '88.

There is one in on the lot....2005 (maybe) 6.5 diesel with the allison transmission. Gooseneck hitch and 170K miles.

They said they'd "let it go" for $16K?

that would be a duramax (Isuzu) very good diesel . lifting the cab off a ford to work on the diesel engine I don't care for. I got 300,000 on my 2006 duramax and not a problem yet.

Allen you know more about them than most. I'm not a Chevy fan but I know folks that get along fine until they have to replace the injectors. I drove a '12 F250 with the 6.7 diesel. That thing was scary strong but they have a lot of electronics.

Not cheap either. I just do not like the high pressure oil system Ford is using on the newer diesels. It is a system prone to trouble.

Good grief, that thing must be gold plated. I priced a brand new F350 4x4 dually a couple of weeks ago for $32K. It was a gasser plain jane but a diesel was less than $40K. I also priced a 2010 F350 V10 4x4 with 60K miles and 6 speed manual for $17500.

Ever see one around with the 8.1 and Allison? Didn't know if a gasser was an option. We thoroughly are hard on my 3 and they keep on going...

Allen,

My dad is the lead technician at a Chevrolet dealership in town, has been working with bow ties for 40 years!

He has seen a LOT of these new Duramax's, and they are flippin AWESOME!!!! WAY more power (we think) than a Come-a-part. And well, we both hate Fords, you know, just cause! :p

I think you would be VERY happy with it! Actaully sounds like a pretty ok price too! Saw one the other day in town, it was a 2003, 240000, $15,500! And it was BEAT to _ _ _ _!!

jay-eye-see. Say what you want. It is a free country. LOL

I just think the high oil pressure system on the Fords is a poor design. Why not just use a third rocker arm like most of the rest of the engines use??? Million mile semi motors use that system.

The 7.3 Diesel is good motor. I have a 2000 F350 that I am getting on the road this summer. The 6.0 and 6.4 Ford diesels have too many issues to be good. I think they would be great if they did not have the EPA mandated garbage on them. A good friend has 6 2008 F250s for work trucks. At factory setup they give trouble regularly. With the EGR deleted and the exhaust filter gone they are pretty darn good. The trouble being they then are not legal in too many places.

My brother runs three Duromax Chev's. They run fine but the mileage and upkeep cost is not low on them.

The mileage is not good on any of the EPA rigged diesel motors in pickups.

FYI, the high pressure oil system with the HEUI injectors ended with the 6.0. The 6.4, introduced in '08, and later engines used piezo injectors.

I bought a 2006 Duramax with 70K miles three years ago. It has 125K now, and I have been very happy with performance and mileage

I had a 93 Chevy HD2500 with the 6.5 turbo and 4L80 tranny. It got 16 mpg but threw a rod. I now have an 02 3500 GMC with the Isuzu 6.6L engine and Allison tranny. I get 18 mpg. Its injectors were replaced by GM under a quiet recall.

If it's 4 wheel drive you would have something, otherwise, those heavy front end trucks get stuck in their own shadow.

I have an 08, brother n law has an 06 GMC and father n law has an 03. We have almost 500,000 miles on them between the three. The father n law has almost 300,000 on his alone. We have all had to replace glow plugs and the 03 needed a power steering pump. Other than that they have been very trouble free other than routine maintenece stuff. I got bad fuel last month and plugged the fuel filter but that was not the trucks fault.

I am asking only a grand more for a 2012 F250 Lariat Diesel that I want to sell out of AZ office.

JD, there is a reason for the high pressure oil system - EPA. The old third rocker was not precise in fuel metering, and therefore was not as emission friendly as the high pressure system. FYI, emissions, fuel economy, and drivability need not be mutually exclusive. Trouble prone systems plague ALL manufacturers. Many of them are mandated by the gubbermint. Tier IV and later diesels are something we will have to live with for a while until more reliable technology comes along.

A point of information - thanks to electronics and such, a 3 liter class engine puts out 200 horsepower, almost ZERO emissions, and gets over 20 miles to the gallon while pulling a family sized sedan. You are old enough to remember that a typical '60s or '70s sedan had a 5 liter or larger engine, made less than 200 horsepower, got 12 miles to the gallon, and the exhaust stunk to high heavens while polluting our air. Don't you think that some of the new technology is doing its job? I also think that they are now going overboard with some of the electronics, but that is for another thread.

I know several people who have 2002 thru 2006 GMC 2500's with the duramax and allison trans, best trucks they have ever had. One has almost 450K on her truck, she hauls horses commercially over most of the country. I wish I had bought mine with the durmax, but 2002 was the first year, and I was afraid of it being a flop. Should have went for it. As long as that truck is in good condition, I'd buy it.

The HEUI system is actually a Caterpillar idea. The problem with mechanical systems is they aren't as efficient as an electronic system can be. Mechanical systems are reliable, but emissions laws have eliminated them.

lets try those 450K miles on a emissions diesel after 2007 and in particular 2011 and later.

Cv shafts, and wheel bearings.
If the steering box needs replaced figure on disassembling the entire front of the truck so you can disassemble the front of the motor to get the power steering pump off to replace it, too.
They tend to run hot prior to 08. Doesn't take much of a slope with a load on to get it dinging at you. Getting the rpm up doesn't cool it down like with a bigger engine either.

If you could stick a 5.9 common rail Cummins and the Allison in a Frod you'd have something.
