is headed out and still growing! I mowed off one field, but plan on combining this one so I don' have to buy seed for the next couple of years. 82 degrees out today! First over 80 since last October. It has been a warm spring.

I hate to alarm you, but there is a big smiling guy in the middle of your field...

You should probably ask him to leave, as he might be trampling things and just really honestly, it is creepy when you have a person standing in your field smiling at you. Honestly, you should take care of that problem soon. He might set up a camp or something...

That there daggone rye looks pretty good, otherwise. just one big weed in it, but other than that, it is really nice for your area.

This time of year, we have 7 foot rye, but we are not Washington at all. The problem is, the grain is worthless here, and the straw wont make as much as a grain crop on the same ground. You are doing spectacular! but again... guy smiling in the field is creepy and will impact yield... Sorry about the problem. Try some 2-4-d or put on some banvil. 7 oz per acre. He might leave...

Before chemical sprays, we used to raise rye to control wild oats. Rye roots will seek out wild oat seeds in the ground and send a root right into the center of the wild oat kernel and kill it.

There was always a heavy crop of rye straw in our area, so it was tough to get the windrows through the combines of old. But wild oats didn't grow for 2-3 years after rye was raised on a field.

Looks good! I'm in NW Illinois and I planted about 5 acres of cereal rye on some rough ground for cover crop seed also. Mine is headed out about like yours. How many #'s of seed /acre do you plant for cover crop and for seed? Chris

I was thinking the same thing!!! Looks like he might be one of those pot smokin dudes! He might even be growing it!!! :p

Looks really good buddy!! Bryce

Yeah, we don't use chemicals here, so I thought I would try some rye on fallow fields. I was really happy with this field and the weed control. I think I used a 50# bag on about 1/4 acre. It looked pretty thin last fall when it came up. Hopefully I can find someone in the area to combine such a small patch.

Rye stools really well if I remember correctly. We used to grow it and sell the seed. It will really mellow the ground too!

Grandad said in the "old" days they would turn the cows into the field and let them graze the early growth. After taking them out the rye grew up and headed out. I plan on trying a small patch just for learnin sake.

If they combine wheat then you do not want to use the same machine for rye as you cannot readily get the combine cleaned out and rye mixed in wheat will keep the wheat from being markatable. Rye does make very good hog feed.
