Started irrigating today.Corn is FINALLY planted.So turned the 'headgate' on.No breaks now.....We will have water running somewhere all summer

That shovel is getting a bit worn!

What are your daytime high/low temp this time of year? Much cooler than average so far in this part of the world.
 
Great photos. I remember starting those pipes in cotton fields as a kid. Nobody drawing from Lake Mead yelling at you?
 
Labor intensive, that's for sure. I've watched them start the siphon hoses; guess you have to have a knack for doing that. I'm not sure how they judge when they have enough water in the field so they can stop the flow and move on to the next field?

Basically the same system that has been used for hundreds of years; haven't seen much change in the way that it is done. Seems to keep the evaporation loss to a minimum.
 

Do you run a cultivator down between the rows to form the furrows {for the water to run}

or

Is that the shovel you make the "missus" use to dig them by hand? :roll:
