never throw anything away

I'm working on the baler, and one of the maintenance items is to replace the pto shield on the shaft. Got to looking in the shed, and I found half a shield from when I replaced one on the neighbors forage wagon the right diameter to match the side that's gotta be replaced. Gotta cut the bell off and make a new plastic bushing for it, but it'll fit and we don't have to spend big bucks just to cut the bell off a new one.

We still have some of the metal shields around also, but don't have any of the hardware for them. I gotta replace a sheild on one of our chopper wagons yet this year, but I don't think we're chopping any of our hay this year if we can help it. Filled 2 bags last year and we just have a lot of feed. Dad was feeding 2013's haylage all through summer of 2014 and I think beyond. We're gonna be baling lots of hay this year....

Tomorrow's fun will be timing the baler again. I took all the chains off except the packer forks, but that one is gonna get replaced as well before I'm done. Spent a little over $100 in chain, but the sprockets still look good for the original chain that's on it, and as stretched as they are that's impressive. Hoping to get it all together tomorrow, probably minus the shield for now.

My Grandpa was a wise man when it came to not throwing away anything. He passed on in 99'. I have not had to buy hardly anything for hardware since. He saved every nut and bolt that ever crossed his path and most parts as well. I have fixed or repaired so many things using what he saved it is almost embarrassing. Yet every time I need something the first place I look is the workshop and more often than not I find what I need or something that can be made into what I need. Of course he was of the generation that lived through the depression and knew what it was not to be able to just go buy something.
