Nick- using his equipment and you driving the tractor. Using farm labor laws, I would say $3.00 to $4.00 an hour.

All right that doesn't seem to bad then sorry about that link it just kinda appeared I just tried and it doesn't go anywhere

Hi
From the 3-$4 an hour as suggested below I think I'd hook that field to the tractor and drag it to Manitoba Canada. Minimum wage for anybody is around $11.00 an hour, and farm guys are $14 upwards depending on experience with what you can operate, and if you got a class one licence or any mechanical experience on top. It seems crazy to me that a guy would work a 40 hour week on a farm for $160 a week. For $4 an hour you couldn't get me out the house to do anything on a farm not even drive a tractor cutting the lawn, at that price no wonder there are a load of broke Americans around the U.S.A !!!!!!.
Regards Robert

$3 to $4/ hour??? That isn't worth the gas to drive over there, you would be better off going to McDonald's and working there. I'd say at least $10/hour unless you are really hurting for cash or he has a cute daughter your trying to date. Yea, anyone can drive a tractor and mower, BUT an experienced operator that knows what he is doing and can take care of the equipment is cheaper than the repairs and downtime fixing what the inexperienced operator can tear up. Your call. Chris

OK, using your logic:
Driving a tractor-trailer: Using the company's equipment, fuel, toll money, etc. What should a driver be paid? Average driver makes over $40,000 a year or more under these conditions. That figures out to about $20/hour.

Working at McDonald's: Again, using their equipment, food, air conditioning in summer and heat in winter. Burger flipper makes around $9.00/hour.

Minimum wage for ANY worker in the USA is around $7.50/hour. Again, using the employer's equipment, fuel, etc.

Are you beginning to see the fault in your logic? How DARE you suggest that a working man work for $3 to $4 per hour?!?!?!?!?!?! Mr. Lincoln freed the slaves - and even they were better paid than you suggest.

Hey Nick,

When I was working at the neighbors, I started out at $12 an hour, and that was 7 - 3, 4 days a week. I did that for 2013 and 2014, this year I was going to $15, and that is nothing around here for a GOOD/GREAT farm hand!

Whether I was swathing hay, chasing horses, or fixing fence, both me AND the employer thought that $15 was fair.

To me, if I was hiring you, I would expect to pay you $12 or so. Not sure a "rookie" (please take no offense, but until you prove yourself to this guy, you are kind of a rookie).

I think you will like it. Takes a little bit of concentration... Bryce

Bryce Frazier- I admire your 'spunk'! but, keep in mind(you were 14 to 15 years old in 2014) most youth at that age would dream of a job paying $12.00 per hour. Heck, in my area I know many adults that would like to earn that!

Good for you and I am glad you found something you enjoy doing.

I have help several different farmers around here putting up hay. Their Equipment. 12-15 per hour. With haying we work when the hay was ready. might be 10am-10pm. If needed would do shop work before or after the hay was ready. Never knew what the hours might be. Colorado. If DeltaRed needs help I will work for food. You need to also consider "Contract labor".

jimg.allentown- I agree with you.

The point of my post was bring out the use of illegal migrants to pick crops at low wages by certain farmers. I see it here, all the way up into Kentucky.

Could I hire someone for the mentioned for $3 to $4 an hour...YES. Would I trust them to know how to use/take care of my equipment...maybe/probably not.

So, YES, I can hire them @$3-4/ hour.

jimg.allentown- "Mr. Lincoln freed the slaves - and even they were better paid than you suggest.".

Do you really think that jimg.allentown?

There are very few people I would trust with my tractor and 8' Bush Hog. Your neighbor is very brave.....

My younger son works at the local country club on grounds crew, mowing, weed whip, loader tractor, chain saw, whatever. He makes $9.50/hr plus free golf (worth about $ 20K/yr to him)

Older son got summer pharmacy tech job for big grocery chain making $10.50/ hr. He enters pharmacy school in the fall and doesn't have to break a sweat this way...

I usually try to give them about $10/hr cash when I beg for haying help

Most of the migrants I've been around make 10 to 12 bucks an hour. Most of the larger dairies in this area even include housing .

How much are you worth as an operator? If you will check out the fluid levels, take care of the equipment in general, operate the equipment in a safe way that keeps from tearing it up then I can't imagine you not being worth $15/hr and if you're not worth $15/hr I wouldn't want you operating my equipment.I don't want any of Greg1959 $4hr operators any where near my equipment.

In any case, the point that I was trying to make is that it is not reasonable to expect someone to work for 3 or 4 dollars an hour - migrant worker or not and no matter whose equipment. That is simply not realistic or legal.
Some more reality:

An average house in an average location costs over $100,000 on average.
A decent new car is hitting $30,000
A fair meal in a diner will cost $12 to $20 plus tip.
Even a burger, fries and drink at the local puke'n'choke will cost you $10.
$3 won't even get you a bus ticket across town - let alone leave enough to send to the folks "back home"

I don't know where you are but most illegals I know command as high or higher wages than "legals". In construction that's $15-$25 an hour - they get it because they'll work.

Yes, you are TOTALLY right! I know adults here that drag there feet and get $7.25 an hour!

Around here, IF you are a hard worker, doing a somewhat demanding job, people are willing to pay a little more, just if nothing else for the assurance that they have a competent employe.

Another thing to keep in mind, is that our pot smoking neighbors, Washington, are trying to raise the MINIMUM wage to I THINK $15 an hour??!?! It is at 11 or 12 now! Total bs....

I see an operating engineer in my area makes 38.12 per hr. The guy that wants to wortk for 3-4 bucks an hour must be on some kind of drugs.
