New Holland 353 Grinder Mixer question

I've been trying to mix and grind with a NH 353. The auger that moves the minerals forward from the mineral box seems to be stuck and the sheer pin keeps shearing. I added the minerals and then engaged the pro to turn on the auger, which seems to have forced too much mineral in at once. I've removed all the mineral that I can by hand and with a shop vac. Is there a way to access the cylinder the auger runs through to clean it out?

The 354 has an access slide door right at the junction of the auger and the mixing bin, but I don't think the 353 has one? I remember Pop taking torch and cutting out an access hole to the auger junction and welding it back in after he made whatever repair he had to make. I would suggest that the PTO be engaged and the auger running when you dump minerals or suppliments into the grinder.

Well Don pointed out the first thing your should do the NEXT time is to never dump mineral into a mill when it is stopped. You slug fed the auger. There should be a clean out door on the side of the bin/tube. I do not remember exactly where it is but I do know there is one. I have owned several NH 353 mills. I now have a NH 358 and it is a little different in that area. You should also turn the auger backward to loosen up the plug. You can do this from the front. Rock it back and forth. IF you keep trying the PTO even with the shear bolt breaking your going to break something. Loosen the auger up by hand first.

I just bought a 355 that had been sitting and transfer auger was stuck from moldy feed that solidified. Had to get in mixer tank with shop vac hose through access cover at bottom with scrapers and other long handled tools. Also took the dust collector off to access auger between mill and tank. Got it freed up after a couple hours scraping and vacuuming.

I can't even tell you how many times I had that cover off a year ago this past winter. The corn was wet and it was so cold,it didn't matter how long I let that darned thing run when I'd unload it,it would freeze up and I'd have to open it up and take the torch to it to thaw it out every time I used it. Which was every six days.

If the mineral was free flowing, it won't jam the auger as suggested below by putting it in and then starting the tractor. I have had a 358 for 20 years, and never had that occur.

That auger also feeds the ground feed from the mill to the tank. Are you sure there is nothing stuck in the front part, under the hammermill?

I used one of them for 30 years. Had a racoon crawl in the tank once. Couldn't get out. He sure plugged things up when I went to use it the next time.

Great feed back. Thank you all. Still working to resolve the issue, which now appears to be more at the bottom of the vertical auger. Got the dust collector off and cleaned out the auger that runs from the mill at front to the mineral box at back, and got that auger turning freely. The vertical auger, however, won't turn freely, so I'm thinking that's where the problem is.
