I got a call from the IRS today. I was about to be taken to court for back taxes I owe. I called the number and talked to someone who could just barley talk English. I was told I needed to pay over 7,000.00. I know it isn't a good idea to talk to these guys. They already had my phone number and address, what could go wrong? I have no idea how they got that. I guess it's public information. No I didn't send the guy the money. By the way, the IRS never calls by phone. Stan

True! The IRS never calls by telephone. Some 20 years ago when the IRS and I had a disagreement, I went home for lunch one noon and found an agent camped on my front steps.

And, I'll have to admit, the guy was real easy to work with. Although I wound up owing some, after we agreed on the amount he put it on an installment plan with payments I could easily live with.

I still have to chuckle about my family's doings with the IRS. My younger brother took over the farm after our Dad passed away. Some hot shot from the IRS went to the farm and demanded brother's tax records for a an audit; which determined that brother owed the IRS $16.

Brother rented some land from our cousin, so they audited our cousin; ended up that he owed $60.

Hotshot IRS fellow then audited our Mom - and found that the IRS owed Mom $600!

That was nearly 60 years ago and none of them were ever audited again by the IRS.

Take the bell out of your landline phone, and you won't ever hear it ring again. Caller ID, or an answering machine is your friend.

If you're unsure whether or not the caller is a scammer, tell them you will call them back on their PUBLISHED number and ask for their extension at that number. If the caller is a scammer, they'll hang up because they know the gig is up.

Better yet, drop your landline and go unlimited minutes with a smart phone. I dropped my landline that I got in 1977. $45 a month for a prepaid, unlimited minutes, unlimited text, unlimited pics, 2 G data. Works better for me.

I got the same call. Told me the Sheriff was waiting to arrest me. If I did not pay. Told him fine send one of your agents to the Sheriffs office.I will turn myself in.Phone went dead.

IRS publishes the fact that they contact you by mail the first few times as long as you are not a potential threat, requiring an immediate visit by an associate.

The scammers as do advertisers play the odds. On a 1% score, which is very frugal odds if you ask me, a million calls will yield 10,000 replies and that can yield 1000 scores for not much invested vs how much they can scam out of the 1000 scores. Some people are afraid of their shadow. AARP had a pro-conner story once and the guy said that in the first minute he knows if he has you as a potential scam. Two of his pet cues are if you ask questions and for sure if you tell him "wait a minute, let me get a pencil".

I just scatter shot the zeroes. Did I get them right? Grin

Ask for their legal service address, tell them it required by local states attorney office. Often a CLICK, then phone hums. Sometimes the script reader keeps talking or say they don't know address (?). Then I tell them that under advisement from the state attorney I am to address them as LIEING THIEVES< CROOKS< WARMBRUDER< Etc. That usually gets the CLICK. Supposed to be a short form of words to use on the scammers giving various languages - Urdu, Russian, Spanish, Yiddish and couple Arabic cusswords- at a couple scam alert sites, might want to look into those. The random IRS audits aren't about collecting taxes from the person being audited, the audits are to remind everybody else who might be thinking about cheating that they might get caught. Without audits our tax collections would look like Greece's. Greece collects something like 60% of taxes due.

Targeted audits are to collect taxes, or because you did business with some one they did catch. Audits are a necessary evil as long as some people are crooked.

If one of the scammers was to call me I'd just tell them the Sheriff knows where to find me.
