Motor oil and termites

Does motor oil repel termites?

A freind of mine told me that he keeps termites out of his pole barn by pouring old motor oil around the base of the poles to keep termites from eventually destroying it. He pointed out a stack of hedge posts nearby that he plans to burn this week. After three years in a stack termites had basically hollowed them out to 1/4 their original weight and rendered them useless.

Motor oil would probably repel termites but it might attract environmental crackpots. Can you imagine having to remove the dirt around a building two feed deep and carry it to a hazardous waste dump.

In my opinion.......
Soaking poles in oil prior to installation has been known to prevent termites.
Pouring or spraying oil on the ground level wood that is set on a stone footer has been known to prevent termites.
Pouring oil into the dirt around a pole born will get you a fine at best. The termites will just go under it.
Any treating of poles buried in the ground has to be done before installation.

I havn't tried motor oil but tremites destroyed 5 bundles of Gaf Timberline asphalt shingles along with the pallet they were on inside a pole barn.

Try spraying termites with wd40 or put a little used motor oil on them. Kills them. EPA will get a wild hair over people doing it. Velisco Chemical in Marshall, Il used to make chloridane, best stuff on the market. It came from crude oil

I'll never forget an old man I knew. He said to keep termites and bugs out of the house you pour kerosene on the foundation and let it run down into the dirt. I didn't have kerosene around but had lots of used oil. I would put the oil in an old cup and pour it down the foundation about six inches above the dirt. Never had an issue with ants, bugs, or termites. The guy wasn't a crackpot - he was a smart cookie.

I don't think we have termites in N MN but I still pour a little used oil around my poles, I know it's an environmental violation, but it sure makes them last longer!

The stuff's a hazardous waste. It doesn't stop there, it keeps going on down into the gruond water. Keep pouring it, you'll be drinking it soon.

I knew an engineer who worked for Velico Chemical where they made Chloridane. He said the best way to keep termites out for ever is mix 1 gallon of chloridane with 50 gallons of kerosene, it will stay in the ground forever.

The EPA approved stuff my termite man uses only lasts about 10 years.

And that stuff is a lot more toxic that motor oil ever dreamed of being. For that matter, CCA treated wood is extremely toxic (arsonic and Chromium) and much more dangerous to the water table than motor oil.
