O.T. preventing shingle mold black marks

Here in the northern part of pa. Black marks & mold shows up on the north side of the house. There are no trees near the house, so is there anything you can do go prevent this?

I never tryed it but was told if you put some zinc coated flashing up under your ridge caps, with about an inch exposed. As it gets wet and runs down the roof it will stop mold and roof discoloing.

There must be something to the galvanized thing, because my roof is clean below all the roof penetrations on the north side. Everywhere else has black mold streaks. I've also heard that a copper cable, similar to a lighting rod cable, just below the ridge will work too. Might be a bit pricey though.

I got some wash at Home Depot that took care of the problem. don't remember the name but will get it if anyone interested.

Any cleaner with phenolic disinfectant will keep it from growing for a few months. Get the wall clean spray the Phenolic product on, but don't rinse. It has residual germicidal activity which whenever it gets wet will kill whatever comes in contact with it, so nothing can grow.

Old iron has it right. When I was working for a home builder he always had us put a roll of zinc under the ridge cap so that about an inch is exposed. It really worked well, even on houses built in the woods. Zinc might be hard to find now though. I work at a lumber yard and we can't get it. Shingles now come with zinc particles in them to prevent black mold.

I had green mold growing on wood shingles. North side of shed and it looked yuk. Water and Clorox in pump sprayer did pretty darn good. Now if it starts up again, this time I will spray with water and some copper sulfate mixed in. THAT stuff is supposed to stop anything.

Yes, that may be true, but the trick is to get that rain water that passed over the zinc coating onto the side wall of the house. :?

I also Googled "preventing roof mold" and came up with a number of hits.
