Arc in the eye

I did a dumb thing today and got both eyes full of arc. I was welding, then grinding and forgot to change my mask back. I guess that is a curse of the auto darkening ones, you feel a mask on and assume it will darken. This is my first time doing it. My eyes are pretty bloodshot tonight, but really don't hurt that much.

What should I expect?

If you burnt them bad enough you will know it in the morning. Will feel like someone threw sand in your eyes! Good luck, Been there done that!

Wait till you fall asleep. I have never had mine hurt bad during the day, but when I used to be a welder, I have been woken up by weld flash burns to my eyes a few times. It will wake you up, your eyes will be watering terrible, and it almost feels better the tighter you squeeze your eyes shut. Feels like sand in there. You can get eye drops that will cut down the pain if not numb your eye, can't remember if they are prescription or not. Hope it's not too bad and you don't end up feeling like I just described. Good Luck

Ross

If you were really grinding with your hood on, you shouldn't have gotten flashed since most auto dark helmets have uv protection even when not welding. If you're burnt, I'll bet it's from something else.

I have been in that situation as well, One of the older men I worked with told me when you get flash burn to take and slice up russet potatoes and with eyes open lay the slices on your eyeballs, do that as long as you can stand it and before you know it the pain is gone. On another note I never could find whoever or whatever it was that kept pouring the sand in my eyes at night after a flash burn that day, but for whatever reason the potatoes thing really does work.

NO home remedy will help if you truly got welder burn in the eyes. BTDT and been in the hospital more then once from it and auto dark helmets that work if you are if you are straight on but side welds get you. About the time you go to bed you will know if it got you bad and then a trip to the E.R. is the only way for help also BTDT and calling 911 when you can not see and live alone is not good also BTDT

I too have Old Age Attention Deficit Disorder (OAADD). It's possible mine was caused by auto darkening lenses.

I've feel your pain, no advice on cure for OAADD.

I burned mine bad that way when I was in high school. Felt like I had sand in my eyes for about three days. Had to wear sunglasses.

Ah yes, sand in the eyes. It usually hits about 3am. You can go to the doc for it but it doesn't really do any good. Should feel better by mid morning.

My eyes are a little gritty this morning, sounds like I got lucky.

Thanks for all the responses.

I did like Randy. Got the sand treatment at night and wore sunglasses for a few days. Just waited for it to ware off. BUT never wore sunglasses to weld with again. This was gas welding, not arc.

You should always wear polycarbonate safety glasses inside your helmet. If you accidentally get flashed, the glasses will stop most of the UV from getting to your eyes.
