JD 24T Pitmann end caps

I replaced the pitmann arm on my 24t (the old one had a slight bend in it that worried me), bushings on the plunger end, and the bearings in the end caps. I didn't mark the end caps before I took them off and now I read in the shop manual that I should have. I looked at the caps and noticed that one side of each has poorer paint coverage so I am assuming that they were on the bottom. Is there any way to verify that this is the correct orientation? When the caps are positioned this way, both of the bearings' ears are on the bottom side. Thanks for any tips!!!

The match between the two caps is what is important. I would ASSUME they were assembled at the factory and honed to a precision size. If you flip them in relation to each other, the bore will no longer be perfectly round as it was machined.

Clean them up and look closely at the hone marker inside them using a magnifier, if needed, you should be able to match up the hone marks. Also, check at the parting line as to whether there is a smooth match there or if there is an offset 'cause the caps are mis-matched.

That is what I feared. Do you happen to recall if the ears for the bearings were on the same side or opposite of each other?

After 50 years do you think that machine work is still that precise? I recall the neighbor's 14T had a rag tied in place with baling wire between the pitman arm and the plunger to "adjust" for wear in the side travel. Pumped a lot of grease in it and used it for years. The excessive amount of grease kept the rag from wearing out (beats paying for bushings).

No, I don't. Typically inserts in a engine always have the tabs on opposite sides, but I cannot tell you for sure about this unit.

I have only put bearings in one 24T pitman arm, and that was about 1980!

Do you have pictures on your cell phone from when you did the bearing replacement? (Just teasing of course). I will put them together with the bolts and a vice clamp and mic them in both orientations and see which way is closer. Thanks for the help.
